    Default Little help recognising things

    Hi all,

Basically I've recently bought myself a little run about, but I've had to put a bit of work in to it already. Unfortunately I've come to a point where I'm slightly stumped.

Basically, I need help recognising the engine I have, and a couple of sensors.

The engine was changed by the previous owner from a 1.2 to a 1.4 that he removed from his race car. The block says its a C14SE, but I thought these were injection engines, whereas this has a carb on the top..

Also, it seems to be struggling to start unless the choke is on fully open, and if the choke is closed the car will cut out.. From this I also get plumes of white smoke from the exhaust that just smell of fuel.

I've done a bit of research and it seems to be a coolant temperature sensor that could be at fault. This brings me on to the next thing to be recognised. I have a sensor on the side of the engine (which is not plugged in to anything) , and also have one on the side of the radiator.. Which is which?

It will be the 1.4se single point injection not the multipoint as found in the mk2 nova Sri. I would swap the cts sensor.

Which sensor would I be replacing.. The one on the block or the one on the radiator?
Although, the one on the block isn't plugged in.. Could that be my issue?

Plug it in and see what happens. The cts sensor is a cold start sensor.

Looks like an SPI engine, but you say it has a choke... very odd, also there is a facet pump on the bulkhead, which leads me to think its a carb setup.
The bottom end is from the proper injection version though.

The sensor on the Rad is just the fan switch, its not any use to the enginer running.
If its a purely carb engine then the coolant temperature sensors is useless, you need to get it to a rolling road and have the fuel and ign setup

Yeah, I'm not sure what he's done, but the block definitely says C14SE, so I'm confused..

The problem with plugging in the sensor on the block is that there is no loose wiring to plug in to it.. That's why I thought the one on the radiator might be the coolant temperature sensor.

But from what has been said it could possibly have nothing to do with the problem I'm having. The fact it will only run with the choke fully open and as soon as I close it the engine will cut out..

Looks like it has been an spi motor but someone has had chew with the wiring or somthing so they have fitted a carb with the spi tophat modified to fit . Hence the reason its got the facet pump . As there is no mechanical pump on the cam housing ??

Sounds like it's multiple engines fused together!

So would could possibly be the factors behind my plumes of smoke, smell of fuel, and only running with the choke open?

Wrong carb setup and/or bad ign timing

Ah wonderful. How do I go about getting that sorted? Is it gonna cost me a fortune?
