    Default Distributor timing

    Hi All
    I have a motor sport distributor in my rally car 1.4NV, normally it's fitted with a vacuum operated advance distributor but the motor sport one is none vacuum.
    Where should I be setting the distributor ie like the old one using a timing strobe light on the timing marks or should it be set up differently.

    Best place to do this is on a rolling road. iirc you set the timing without the vac line connected on a std car.

    Yes garyc but then a vac dizzy will advance as the revs go up and a none vac dizzy I believe will not so dose this mean it must be set more advanced or am I wrong ?.

    You are wrong.

    Base timing should presumably be the same as std. since its a race dizzy, im assuming additional advance is done with adjusted weights and or springs.

    If you had to gain 10deg by adding 10deg to your base timing then you very likely do not have a race dizzy.

    I have never understood removing of the vac feature. As this looses the '3d' timing ie referencing load and rpm to give a timing condition for a wider range of running variables.

    I get the argument for 'reliability' and how race engines run mostly WOT but... really?

    I had no vacuum advance on my 1.4 nv either. I experimented with it get the running best over time so I would guess a rolling road would be the best way forward?

    If using twin 40s then there is no vacuum outlet on the manifold, so with the old distributor then the vacuum is not used.
    With the timing gun set your timing at idle to 16°, this gives you the most advance later in the Rev range.
