if it's original paint you can't rub too hard or you will rub through as you have found out. Original paint is quite thin.
i like the red too you should keep it.

Some more progress tidied a few bits up & had battery out to examine the tray. Good condition
Went to get some alloys aswell GSI stepdowns. Next job is get it all welded.
