What do you do to read the codes? Sorry for the pretty basic question.... Do I need an EML light?

Count the flashes on the dash when ignition/engine on. Look up the flashes on here to tell you what's wrong.

And if the wire isn't plumbed in....
My CEL doesn't come on at all and the wiring diagram I looked at for the dash plug doesn't mention the CEL wire.... which colours should I connect up?

The wires will already be there - its the brown yellow you need to earth to get the light to flash - as said. The EML wire to the dash is brown/blue iirc? (there's a wire that will be near the ECU and a wire on the back of your clocks - just join them together!
