Drive shaft removal query -

A couple of quick q's chaps:

1/ Drive shaft removal - I'm looking to remove both driveshafts from my '89 SR. Haynes manual mentions a special tool to release from the transmission (which I don't have) or using a large screwdriver to release the circle. At the moment I have fairly limited access so the question is how much effort is required to release this circle ?

2/ Engine & box removal - If the above goes to plan, am I right in saying that without the shafts the engine together with 'box will come easily from above ?

I just gave mine a short hard tug and they both came out easy mate

You can use them as a slide hammer to pull them from the box, probably not ideal for the inner CV but works

It's easier going out the bottom still (e.g. can do it purely with jacks although a crane is easier) but I'm sure Benn will come here crying about how everyone who removes an engine from the bottom is a pansy and should be slapped

^ I'm lucky enough to have a pulley chain block hanging off an RSJ, so it's coming out from above

If you remove it from above and plan to push the car backwards out the way, put a spare outer CV in the hubs and tighten up to keep the wheel bearing tight.

I tried levering mine out with no success so got the hump and gave them a hard tug and they came out

As said, use the driveshaft as a slide hammer, ideally the outer is removed from the hb, or the lower ball joint disconnected.

Close the driveshaft up, i.e. push it all the way in the yank it out, the inner circlip should just pop out.

I have changed one on an 89 SR. without the special tool.....big screwdriver job.

i found the bearing in the front wheel the hardest part. Was damm tight had to get some scaffold pole out for leverage to undo it.

Whats wrong with a prybar between box and cv cup?
Or a cold chisel between the two and a tap with hammer.
its never failed the thousands of times for me.

If all fails drop the diff plate and prize out off the diff housing.
