Does anyone know how far in or out it should be? Or anyway i can work out if it's in enough or not?

It should go all the way down to the last thread. Just check the rack and pinion moves smoothly.

Bit of tweaking to ensure there's no excessive play but doesn't bind at any point when going lock to lock.

I think Haynes has a good explanation of setting it?

Yeah ok? I've done it up quite a way but not all the way. The one in the pic isnt mine. Just a ref pic.
I'll nip it up a bit more later.

    THank you.

Spin it lock to lock when its loose and get a feel for it, then gradually tighten it up, it should reduce side to side movement in the rack and eventually feel like it's binding when you spin it over, then you've gone too far
