Cat D is just uneconomical repair I think and is the lowest rating. ie the cost of the repair out weighs the value of the vehicle.
If it is a nice car, repaired well and is the rigbt price then go for it.

Remember there are thousands of cars out there that have probably had worse damage and been repaired but you would probably never know as it was repaired by the insurance company. We have even extensively repaired new cars at work before.
Might be wrong but I think you can get the Cat D marker removed.

Cat D shows on a HPI, but it is for minor damage that is uneconomical to repair and it doesn't require a VIC check. Had a few cat d cars without any issue at all, and usually the damage is very superficial.

cat d doest require the vic test on cat c, so it wont show on the tax book, as said above theres cars on the road that have had worst damage and no damage recorded, as long as you buy the car for the rite money and do a full inspection if the area that's been repaired you wont have any problems

Ive had a few cat d cars and they have been fine even with insurance pay outs.
some cars are cat d due to parts being on back order so rather than supply a hire car for months its cheaper and quicker to write the car off. in theory an expensive car could be written off for only a small part if the part is not ready available.

Depends on the car I only buy to run into the ground for personal use I've fixed cars and they have been back for warranty work and not been spotted but I'm mad fussy on the finish

cat d it's no reflection of damage just cheap to right off

cat c is more to stop people ringing cars as there inspection is of ID not quality of work

Correct. Says it in the small print with a lot of them so a lot of people don't realise until it comes to claiming. This is why I sold my cat C Type R as had quotes of £420 but they wouldn't cover written off car, cheapest quote that didn't care was about £750.

Esure, swiftcover etc don't like them, Admiral insured it.

cat d cars are bargins if you are not wanting to re-sale , ive had a few and aslong as you don't expect to make aprofit on them , and just use them, they are the bargins they seem!!

also never had a problem with insuring them as its not really a question they ask!!
