Default E16SE Coolant Pipes Into Mini - Plumbing ?

E16SE going into a mini, confused on the sensor that has the waterpipes going through it, its only on the older engines , heres a picture of it :

    Edit - lost the picture

mine has an electrical sensor attatched to it, then a multiplug from the loom goes to that.

Any ideas if its needed or not ?

The coolant temp sensor goes into the block with a seperate loom connector, the one i have has 3 coolant pipes coming off it and is an aluminium square type box with a sensor ( hard to explain with no picture )

the ally box under the manifold you are on about would be fairly easy to remove & do away with & replace with a rubber hose.. look at kit car supplies/demon tweeks/etc websites to see if someone does a small enoughtemp sensor take off pipe.

Thanks for the response guys, due to the fact the air pipes are the same size as the water hoses was making it confusing, especially since all the engine was in boxes so didnt have a clue where it came from, all built up now and runs perfect. thanks again
