Mdf is way too absorbent. It will soak up anything. How about doubling up 18mm shuttering ply, and when the top is trashed, replace it?

No liquids will be going near it.I considered ply but its quite dear.i cant decide what to do now
Will be building engines on it (not too often i hope!) Welding on it,general faffage etc.
Ply is expensive mdf is spongy and steel is too loud and filthy.

Just mdf it and use sheet steel over the top. I've noticed the boards (mdf) on my racking have mold on them after a few weeks of bot letting air through the garage :/

If it was me I think I would get some cheap kitchen work top and a small sheet of 1mm steel that will cover two or three feet of it.

Replaced both trailing arms on a 17 year old Mk1 Ford Focus (yes really) in under 3 hours in the blistering cold on my front drive. No seized bolts, no rounded nuts... a refreshing change!
One day I'll start a build thread. One day...

New phone arrived, been needing an upgrade in a while as the Samsung Ace 3 is OK, its now old and slow and loses charge too quick. Sony Z5 Compact (still bigger than the Ace 3) is much better.
