    You can pick up an early mk3 mondeo TDDI (115bhp), or if you're lucky a TDCI (130bhp) for that money if you don't mind high mileage. Pish easy to drive, and parts don't cost as much as VAG bits do.

    Find yourself a few more £ and buy my tdci 130 2005 mondeo

    Considering your requirements i would get a clio 1.5 dci £35 a year tax and 50mpg and nippy enough,

    lupo tdi 130. epic fast small hatch, chippable to 150 and 180 bhp, and great on derv. can be got for peanuts. or a seat ibiza tdi or arosa. for cheap boosty fun, try a 205 1.9 tdi, and up the boost and fuel. should find one for £500, make sure its a tdi not a di tho.

    I had a 205 1.9td for a while... my god it was hateful, proper old fashioned mechanicly controlled derv of nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, BOOOST changegear, nothing, nothing etc

    For a grand I's say 18 TD Ford or a TD Vaux, pre-common rail.
