hey all, update for this week.

without wanting to ruin the new underseal and paint underneigth the car i thought i best buy a new cage so i can weld in the spreader plates. a brand new 2nd hand 6 point omp cage came up for sale on here from novasam20. we came to a deal so i went and collected it. eventually got the cage in the car, the front section had to be cut in half as it wouldnt fit in my vec.

picture of test assemble in my garage. its obligatory.

on with removal of the old cage, which is now for sale.

put the rear half of the new cage in, didnt surprise me that it didnt fit. the cage is made for a nova that hasnt got a sunroof or a headlining. no biggie.

cut the front feet off with plenty spare to adjust correctly, welded in the spreader plate that makes a small box section behind the front seats. positioned the cage to how it would sit in the car, cut the legs to length and welded them back on. The rear feet wouldnt sit correctly either, cut these off and used the inch and a half i cut from the front legs to over lap and join the rear feet back on. welded the spreader plates onto the back arches too.

the cage didnt come with bolts for the rear cage feet so i went and bought some nice allen headed bolts, bolted it all down then.

once i got this done i fitted the front section, i placed the dash in position to make sure it misses.

welded in the spreader plates for the front section and bolted it down.

all i have to address now is where the front section was cut in half, im thinkining about joining it just how the front and rear section connect as it will be so much easier to fit when i come to fit it all again. the cut is where the drivers sunvisor is.what do you all think?

also the door bars...i presume there too long so they can be cut to length when you've decided where you want them. where do i want them? like so?

    im missing 2 of these.

these ones are to be welded onto the rear section of the cage for the door bars, the front section has a smaller diameter tubing. might consider fabricating them but knowing me theyll come out poo.

    thanks for reading

How are you planning on finishing the cage mate? With a brush or mask up the headlining?

Phillip-that would be tidy, just need 2 of the smaller door bar tabs/brackets(think 40mm ones)

Graeme-unsure yet of either powdercoating or have it sprayed when I have the car done.

Its got to come back out anyway.

Good work on the cage dude, I'd add some bracing to the legs where you've cut them. (more so the rear legs) Are you welding in a rear strut brace too?

how come you didnt cut the spreader plates from the bottom of the legs and then cut the vertical legs to length then weld the plates or new plates back on so you dont have a join line round the leg and it looks like its meant to be that length?

also what is this car being used for with having this cage in?

Also you can get what they call slip joints which is a piece of tube that is a perfect slide over the tube and then bolt through to secure it and that would probably work for the front where the sun visor is, il try find a pic for you to what i mean

Edit:- here is the link for the joint you want, its only £12 http://www.customcages.co.uk/roll-ca...-in-sleeve-kit

If Carlsberg did Motor clubs, then IDMC would probably be the best motor club in the world.
