cant see why not, mk1 and mk2 don't have the same plug but as long as they are from the same mk you should be ok.

looks like you are doing a good job on this car mate, well done.

The easy way to test it is take the clocks out and drive it up the road, if the pin in the cable is spinning you know it must be the clocks.
if it is the clocks you could just get a 2nd hand set.

The only 3 upsides for keeping it the same colour would be
A. its the right colour to the colour code
B. I could paint it bits at a time, ie I could do the worse bits like the roof and bonnet,...

I would see if the wire had a little split in it and is grounding out. As in the wire that goes to the sender in the tank
