great thread and good to see someone keeping the faith, patiences and commitment to see the car through to what you want. some people give up far to easily. but the best bit is getting what you need from it. the fun factor.

great thread and good to see someone keeping the faith, patiences and commitment to see the car through to what you want. some people give up far to easily. but the best bit is getting what you need from it. the fun factor.
well done
I think its not just the driving that makes it fun. working on the car gives a a sepcial kind of satisfaction, like "i done so much, i'm going to do some more, even if theres a setback, i can do this" .....i hope that doesn't sound exaggerated lol
So i went on today.
In switzerland your car has to be checked by our local MOT every two years. So my time is up and my car has to go back to road legal. First thing to to is replace the engine with the original C16SEi that was in this nova.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_4975c.jpg
so i got on to disassemble the engine bay ...once again lol
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_4976c.jpg
and got the engine out.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_4980c.jpg
bye bye XE! see you in a couple of months.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_4984c.jpg
eeeeeempty. enough space for another engine :)
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_4990c.jpg
tomorrow i'm going to carry on.
Firstly welcome :), and your English is very good. Even better than some PNG members on here... you even used 'Bought' correctly! lol
Some great work on your project. The Nova looks very different compared to what is normally seen on here, very unique. You seem to have lots of skills too.
Keep it up :thumb:
http://www.pngclub.com/forum/what%20...0raise%20it%20i used a aluminium tube approx 12mm in diameter that was big enough for a 8mm screw, then cutted the tube in 4 pieces to the disired lenght and screwed the baseplate, together with the tubes, to the shifter.Quote:
what did you use to raise it ?
After that i filled the empty space with filler. It would be maybe better to use fiberglass rather than filler, the way i did it isnt the best solution.
i'm trying hard to blend in lolQuote:
and your English is very good
Now its "tomorrow" so it was time to get on with it.
Had to rip the engine out from an old nova project wich i abadoned after i realised i needed a trackcar rather than a showcar.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_4991c.jpg
moved the engine to its new workplace :)
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_4994c.jpg
calmy inserting the engine
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_4995c.jpg
an old friend reunited with the car, i wish it was my tuned engine, but standard will do the job for now.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_4997c.jpg
i will get the engine running tomorrow... cross fingers lol
So, my engine is up and running.
I think the 8 Valve engine is louder than the 16V with the 2.5" exhaust system.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5014c.jpg
Because i removed the washerbottle from ist origin place i had to do some customizing.
First turn the water pipes by 180 degrees so the end faces to the right.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5002c.jpg
Then fitted the plastic cover and linked the pipes.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5006c.jpg
After that i had to elongate the existing wires for the washer pump.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5003c.jpg
Everything fitted and ready for testing.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5017c.jpg
and it works! ..one thing less to worry about :)
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5010c.jpg
Have a nice evening! :thumb:
Long time no post
As i had the origin engine back in my nova i had the chance to take some pictures.
...yes thats me :d
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5062c.jpg
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5047c.jpg
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5169c.jpg
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5194c.jpg
For the MOT i had to get my Car to the required safety standards. unfortunately the handbrake cable had snapped while is was working on it.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5236c.jpg
so i dismantled the rear brakes and removed the rotten cable
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5275c.jpg
Got myself a new cable and installed it.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5300c.jpg
brake lines weren't good at all... so had to replace them as well.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5289c.jpg
much better
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5294c.jpg
Cracking mate, love the last picture :)
While my 16V engine was on vacation i could "upgrade" it a little bit :)
first i decided to smooth the intake on the Cylinderhead.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5216c.jpg
which resulted in this. I'm pleased with it as i did it with a drill lol
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5219c.jpg
second i orderd some nice parts for the ol' smallblock lump :d
DBilas 266 Degree camshafts
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5461c.jpg
left dbilas / right original
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5474c.jpg

aaaaand my favorite bit
thottle bodies
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5446c.jpg
i know they're not the best throttle bodies, as i've seen a lot better here :d, but its ok for me... for now hehehe
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5452c.jpg
This car is awesome!! Love the fact you rip it apart quite often but it always goes back togeather better than before!
Keep the updates comming ;)
Quickly i began to assemble the throttle bodies
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5512c.jpg
and mounted it to the engine.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5552c.jpg
the leads for the throttle position sensor was too short, therefore i cutted the leads...
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5554c.jpg
... and elongated them
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5561c.jpg
nice clearance to the throttle linkage
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5565c.jpg
after that i installed the new camshafts
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5584c.jpg
and made a special EGR blanking plate to fool the ECU :d I have milled a groove into it so the engine now gets fresh air instead of exhaust gases.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5593c.jpg
i redesigned the bracket for the idle speed valve provided by dbilas
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5591c.jpg
so it is more compact and could mounted to the inlet manifold
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5601c.jpg
First of all, never seen this thread before, and im gob smacked at the work you've been upto mate, looks amazing! love it allot!
The matig bumper is awesome too..
I cant believe you have to place your original engine back into the car for your "MOT" that crazy!
Will that EGR blank work properly?
Im looking to put a X16 Turbo into my new Loon Project.
Scott
I would be possible to get it legal even in Switzerland, but for me its way to expensive and i dont plan to use this car on the road. I just want it MOT tested so i can do little test drives around the block.Quote:
I cant believe you have to place your original engine back into the car for your "MOT" that crazy!
Sort of. I works much better than just blanking it completely. i takes a lot longer for the ECU to recognise that there's a problem. If you drive normally the ECU is perfectly fooled, if you floor it a few times (>5000rpm) then the ECU is complaining.Quote:
Will that EGR blank work properly?
the plastic shell for the wires was now completely useless
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5623c.jpg
i trimmed it and replaced it by a flexible solution
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5631c.jpg
what a mess of wires and hoses :d
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5626c.jpg
with the throttle bodies you need to lower the alternator
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5661c.jpg
As i run a 8V alternator, the bracket wich is holding it was to long :-/
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5669c.jpg
a few days later my Nova was MOT tested. Now i've got 2 years till the next MOT, but i think it will reach a point wheres no turning back and it will become a racecar.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5675c.jpg
and just ONE DAY after MOT... i ripped out the engine lol
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5695c.jpg
and on the SECOND DAY after MOT an old friend returned
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5709c.jpg
very good mathias i will enjoy keeping an eye on this
after shortening the alternator bracket the clearance was perfect.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5730c.jpg
Cold start... shake it baby! lol

and warm engine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_p_ldzzXi4
had a bit of a wiring problem, the engine had run a bit rich... can't guess why :d
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5755c.jpg
replaced the connector by a 8V Connector with better insulation
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5758c.jpg
got myself a new toy. GoPro HD Hero2
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5762c.jpg
and mounted (screwed) one of the baseplates at a very special place
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5786c.jpg
the wheelarch  hope to get some spectacular pictures
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5793c.jpg
after installing the engine i realised the throttle cable was to long, so i modified it by using two aluminium pipes.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5778c.jpg
gopro picture of the XE ...nice view :)
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i...H/GOPR0043.jpg
First test drive with throttle bodies

had to make a new mounting point for the exhaust system. The exhaust kept touching the rear axle.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5819c.jpg
mounting point from inside the car.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5863c.jpg
took some pictures after couple of test drives :d
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5838c.jpg
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5856c.jpg
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5847c.jpg
Engine is running good. But you need to get revs, under 5000 rpm theres not much happening. after 5500rpm its ...woahhhhhh until revlimiter at 7200rpm :d
rough idling speed at 950 - 1000rpm. tick over sounds very racecar-ish.
one day later i changed the fuelpump to a C20XE one... just in case and for no particular reason
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_5865c.jpg
it was a beautiful day and perfect for some nice videos and pictures.

Thanks for reading an have a nice evening!!
Last few photos are fantastic! Love the camera in the arch, im guessing cause of mot law you cant upgrade the brakes?
Awesome wprk on the engine and tb build.
I upgraded them to astra gsi 16V brakes, and nobody at the MOT noticed :dQuote:
im guessing cause of mot law you cant upgrade the brakes?
Looks damn sexy, love the subtle widened body. Love the inlet too.
Great work :)
Anything over 100bhp in nova is scary, as you soon realise the steering wheels on the piss, you have a thin skin of tin between you and the road (an other cars) you touch both sides the car with no effort wen sat inside, the windscreen is almost touching your face! lol there so comical its ace!
Only the original mini is smaller then a Nova, i bet smart cars are wider! lol
Too much overpriced and overrated dilbert tat, but other than that a great build :)
Not every country provides the law and regulations to use a TB setup like Jenvey, SBD or something like that. Maybe its overpriced for you and not as good as others, but at least you're able to get it road legal in Germany and maybe even in Switzerland (if you got enough money :d). So for that purpose it's the only decent thing you can get over here.Quote:
Too much overpriced and overrated dilbert tat
Sure, if im going to convert my Nova into a full racecar i would definitely choose a TB setup you can get in GB :thumb:
is the ban on motorsport still in place in switzerland?
Yes, but The ban is only for circuit racing. We've got great hillclimb and slalom events. i hope i can take in one of them some day :)
Had a little problem with the cooling, so i dismantled the cylinderhead.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6142c.jpg
At first the problem seemed small. The headgasket let the exhaust gases in to the cooling circuit.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6144c.jpg
massive cooling water consumption at the third cylinder.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6156c.jpg
At the cylinderhead the problem was way more obvious :wtf:
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6150c.jpg
So i grabbed some abrasive paper wich resulted in this:
there was a groove with a, at least, 0.5mm depth
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6152c.jpg
A mate of mine had a spare x16xe and a cylinderhead he didn't need. So he gave them to me for free -> big thanks to him!
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6162c.jpg
I removed the cylinderhead of the spare engine becaue of low milage and sent it for refurbishing.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6172c.jpg
After a couple of days it was cleaned, had new valve seals and had beed resurfaced
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6188c.jpg
well... cleaned? :wtf: i don't think so.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6189c.jpg
so i grabbed my tools and cleaned them myself.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6197c.jpg
after that i decided to to some budget-racing-engine-mounts lol with windshield adhesive
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6199c.jpg
a few days after that everything was ready to reassemble the engine.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6222c.jpg
short after that my engine was back the way it was.Apart from the air filter, which was missing because a friend of mine needed it for his MOT.
The engine sound was nice though :d
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6226c.jpg
the engine mounts made a big difference.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6220c.jpg
now the whole car is shaking at idling speed... i feel like a milkshake :d but at least the engine isn't rocking as much as before when driving a bit 'sporty';)
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6229c.jpg
New parts arrived *woohoo*
Pipercross PX500 airfilter with baseplate and four air horns
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6250c.jpg
Quaife Torsen differential
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6252c.jpg
nice, small and oily :)
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6263c.jpg
rose jointed suspension parts
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6253c.jpg
there's some welding to be done to get them mounted to the chassis
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6258c.jpg
over all, it will be a very nice addition to my nova
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6259c.jpg
to get an idea how to mount it i placed it unter the car and realised it could be easely welded to the original mounting point.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6269c.jpg
so this will be my solution: cut out the shape of the bracket and weld it together
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6273c.jpg
on a nice sunny saturady i changed the differential.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6277c.jpg
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6289c.jpg
Had to hold the crown wheel with a vise-grip wrench to loosen the screws, otherwise the differential wont come out.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6299c.jpg
my self made strut brace was blocking the way out :tard: ...easy differential removing wasnt in my design :d
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6301c.jpg
original differential dismounted
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6307c.jpg
the removal of the speedo gear was a bit tricky but with two flat screwdrivers i was able to do it.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6312c.jpg
and to get it mounted to the quaife differential i placed it in very hot water to expand it a little bit.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6319c.jpg
after that it was a piece of cake to get it mounted.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6321c.jpg
new bearings
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6323c.jpg
then its was ready to get back in my gearbox
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6328c.jpg
there it was waiting for the new diff :)
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6351c.jpg
placed the differential into the gearbox
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6357c.jpg
reassembled everything that was needed
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6363c.jpg
and finished with time to spare :)
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6365c.jpg
unfortunately i had no oil... because i didn't want to stress myself to get it finished at the end of the day, so i had to wait a few days to drive it.
The first testdrive was awesome, i never driven a car with a LSD so it was completely new territory for me. It was fun! :d
friend of mine painted the valve cover for me.
matt blue... looks like one big lego brick
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6427c.jpg
i'm happy with it :)
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6433c.jpg
Nice set of updates! Pikey engine mounts are great for how easy they are to do. Diff was a great mod too it really transforms the car. Suspension is an unusual design where did you get them from?
i wanted to know if it is possible to convert the dbilas throttle bodies to open air horns.
and yes it's possible, in fact very easily.
i used the hose that was provided by dbilas an cut it to fit around the air horns
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6451c.jpg
that then could put together with the house of the throttle body
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6452c.jpg
and mounted to the TB
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6463c.jpg
very nice
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6467c.jpg
now i'm very pleased with the way this looks
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6469c.jpg
but for safety reasons i needed to get an air filter around it.
i had to cut out a piece of the baseplate so it wouldn't hurt the waterhose
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6495c.jpg
made 4 holes with a 51mm hole saw
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6503c.jpg
drilled a hole for the air temperature sensor
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6507c.jpg
i had to assemble the whole thing before mounting it to the engine because there isn't much space in the engine bay.
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6508c.jpg
i'm lovin it
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6514c.jpg
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6517c.jpg
http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i.../IMG_6520c.jpg
thanks! i never though the engine mounts would made such a big difference, i always had my eye on Harry Hocklys engine mounts (or similar designs) but now im very pleased i saved some money :)
The suspension is from http://www.timms-autoteile.de i don't know who's the manufacturer of it, there is nothing written on it
Please please please mount the front rose joints in the verticleplane as they will move/twist if you weld them to the front bracket as your picture shows.
I do not quite understand, you think it will push the bracket towards the middle of the car?
It'll twist the x member down. Have a look for jonlem's thread selling rose jointed parts like you have and see what happened with joints the same as yours.
i know the pics aren't great, but you will get the idea what we mean.

also, i think you should remove the old mount & fit these direct to the chassis, or you risk limiting the adjustment.
