Running a standard dissy?

What management have you got?

craig green
16-05-07, 10:32 AM
I thought it was MBE......

You wouldnt want to slip with a screwdriver when near that paint!

Is that a brand new gear cluster? Also is that a Quaiffe ATB or do they do plate type diffs?.... Just interested.

the gear cluster is second hand but has only done a couple of meetings in autograss then the fella changed to a 2 speed box so its like new

yeah its a quaife atb diff, not sure if they do a plate one i would expect they will do though

anyway i took it to santa pod in 2007 and needed earmuffs on to drive it down due to the combined noise of the gearbox, throttles, exhaust and no sound deadning whatso ever! lol

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/DSC04657.jpg

then few months later i decided the bay could do with a freshen etc and also could do with putting that 4.2 FD in the box so out came the motor

me taking the alternatot to bits to have it chromed!
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/DSC04770.jpg

you can see in this pic how grubby and dirty the tb's had become
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/DSC04768.jpg

so i removed them and individually bead blasted them
from this
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/DSC04809.jpg

to this
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/DSC04810.jpg

so i blasted all the bodies and the inlet manifold and replaced all nuts and bolts with stainless items and had all linkages etc silver zinc plated and ended up with this
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/DSC05143.jpg

all put back together

anyway at this point me and the mrs found a nice house with yard, driveway and best of all a big double garage so we had to move fast if we wanted it before someone else got it so after a few phonecalls and a few offers the house was ours!!!!! and you guessed it the nova got pushed aside for about 8 months while we renovated the house but i did still buy bits and pieces for it when i could afford it

alternator back from the chromers
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/Photo-0114_000.jpg

i bought a metal opel plug cover and had my mate nick paint it for me, what a absolutley awesome painter he is
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/astrawip039.jpg

i was never too keen on the speedline mistrals and ive always had a soft spot for the oz rally wheels so after months of looking i found some magnesium oz rally wheels in a 6.5j 15 et45 so i snapped them up straight away, ill be getting them refurbed and painted black eventually
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/Photo-0150_000.jpg

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/Photo-0149_000.jpg

i also had my engine covers repainted by nick as they were a touch dirty, the finish is simply awesome
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/DSC05291.jpg

well this is where the nova had been resting, in the garage at the new house
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/002-2.jpg

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/mattspics004.jpg

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/mattspics009.jpg

i had originally intended to freshen the bay and maybe put some high comp pistons and cams in the xe but it seemed quite costly to do this with not much of a big difference in power gain as it was already around the 200bhp mark.
so with all the inspiration of barnes absolute animal of a turbo corsa this had made me seriously think of going down the turbo route as it was so much more bhp per £ so i sort of looked at the nova abit as you randomly do pmsl! and after a few txts to barnes himself the decision was made to turbo it!!!!!!!

i didnt want to buy a let motor as it would be a grand and as i intended to change all internals anyway i thought it would be false economy so i sourced a coscast xe motor to convert to turbo spec

well i got the new xe motor on the stand ready for strip down
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/Photo-0276.jpg

engine all stripped down, found 1 of the conrods were bent!

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/009-2.jpg

so with that done i bought a set of cav td oil squirters and the oil return fitting for the block and sent the lot to tony baker to be fitted etc

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/DSC05223.jpg

well with the block back i needed some pistons so i got a set of omega low comp forged pistons from steve milton with pockets to handle +1mm oversize valves
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/003-2.jpg

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/002-3.jpg

with these bought i took the block, pistons and crank to paul gardner to have the block bored, honed, decked and crank ground if it needed it, turned out the crank was still perfect after 21 years of work! so it was just polished and balanced, he also supplied me with the genuine big end/mains bearings (heavy duty turbo diesel ones)
block when i got it back

thanks for all the comments etc guys, just never got round to updating thread on here etc but as quite alot of people have asked whats happening to it etc i thought id update it from the thread over on cs

moving on to the head side of things, i started to remove the valves from head with tommy tools pmsl
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/Photo-0299-1.jpg
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/Photo-0300.jpg

with all valves out i set about removing the stem oil seals, what a barsteward of a job that is with some **** pliers!

then gave head a good clean up

i have got a set of 13mm bronze guides, also waiting for my valves to arrive
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/008-2.jpg

i also bought some fags for the occasion, i dont smoke but thought id have them close to hand just to look cool, sorry no pics of the cigars

couple of pics of my intercooler, some of you may have seen it before
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/DSC05217.jpg

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/DSC05216.jpg

the job i was dreading was doing the cutout on the crossmember so it would fit
looking all nice
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/DSC05547.jpg

after a bit of a weigh up i just cut along there
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/DSC05548.jpg

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/DSC05550.jpg

quick trial fit revealed it fits ok apart from the pipes on end tanks are very tight against the inside of the chassis legs so i took the intercooler to have the pipes cut off and re welded 10mm further in on both ends
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/DSC05549.jpg

cut out
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/DSC05551.jpg

did a bit of welding for some strength
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/DSC05552.jpg

so i then bent and cut some 18 gauge sheet steel to weld in
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/DSC05557.jpg

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/DSC05561.jpg

just wanted to build a good spec engine that should be good for 400bhp but figured if i build it to handle 500+ then i could just up the boost/fueling without having to start uprating other parts etc if i ever wanted more power

just costs a fortune to build a motor to a good spec from scratch as ive found out, just cant wait to use it

Benn

That's a good way to do it.

And yeah sadly it will. Be worth it tho.

I echo the above. Always been one of the best around, hopefully putting your own stamp on it can only improve things further mate! I agree with ditchign the smooth boot and the mistrals, loving the O.Z's. A high spec turbo motor will just be the icing on the cake!

whats the compression ratio going to me mate?? thats a very hefty gasket??

such an awesome car as said previous, do you think the SCCR will cope ????

maybe if you keep the sccr can you get an f28 flywheel??? f28 pressure plate and run an f20 friction that way you'll have the pressure you need on the plate?

Not any firm plans at the moment.

Some new wheels in the pipeline & would love to stip it again & colour change, need to sell my house though first & get one with its own garage so its not at parents 10 miles away :(

Loving the progress Matt - good to see you putting your mark on it
Really like your choice of wheels - Very very rare !!!!!

Glad to see you updating on here - always struggle to find it on CS

I can't wait to see it again - It's years since I last had my grubby hands (covered in soft clean fluffy gloves) on it :)

havnt a clue what cr will be, never worked it out tbh, head and block have had a skim though, 2mm is a large gasket but thats what sbs supplies so im assuming it will be ok??

im unsure if the sccr will cope as ive hard they dont like lots of torque, if it breaks ill just fix it i suppose, dont really fancy going f28 as a good one is getting hard to find, if they break its a ****ing pain and my car is alredy set up to run with a f20 (gearlinkage etc)

i have a helix paddle clutch for it already with hd pressure plate, if it wont do ill just get a better one lol

i had my heart set on a set of those wheels from the beginning and i eventually found a set that were 6.5j et45, but just recently after more searching even though i already had a set i eventually found a set of 5 just 20 miles away in perfect 15" 6j et49 never thought id ever find some in that fitment

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/003-12.jpg

already have the quaife gearkit in my f20 box and with the 4.2 cwp that i was intending to use it was only going to be good for about 114mph whaen i worked it out

thats obviously gonna be no good when the box is bolted to the turbo motor,

i did try it with the std 3.55 cwp when i first got the gearkit but because the 1st gear is longer ratio to start with it made it hellish to get set off, had to slip clutch etc, was like setting off in second

but now ive found out the f20 4x4 box has a 3.72 cwp so i think im maybe going to try that

so ive found a f20 4x4 box that im going to rob of the 3.72 cwp

box fetish, the other box in pic is a f16 that i was hoping to be a close ratio as they have a 3.94 cwp and apparently fit the f20 box too, but as it happens its a wide one with the same 3.72 cwp as the 4x4 box

so started stripping box, here are my new bearings
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/001-17.jpg

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/006-14.jpg

with all gears pulled off the vaux shaft i had a bit compare, new pinion should help loads as its alot smaller
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/007-12.jpg

and started to put gears back onto the new pinion shaft, thats how i left it for tonight

got input shaft bearing nocked out, just ready for new one to be pressed in
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/002-18.jpg

well i had abit of a gaerbox casing fail lol

whils trying to pull out the mainshaft outer race from the casing this happened
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/001-19.jpg
so now i need another f20

but on the plus side all cluster is built back up
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/002-19.jpg

got another f20
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/001-20.jpg

gave it a quick paint with hammerite
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/005-13.jpg

then put it all back together with new gaskets and seals etc
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/matthew172/006-15.jpg

hi matt have you thought about having the gearbox parts cryogenicly treated the freezing process is supposed to toughen the metal so may last better with the mass of torque this setup will throw at it

hadnt actually thought about that blue peg, i dont really want to start taking it apart again now either, ill just see if its going to take the torque as it is then if not its something i can always look into, thanks all the same

Had my Nova now about 13yrs & its been a 2.0 xe since 1999.

In all that time i have never driven or even been in a Turbo Nova!!

I love the instant power of the NA Bodies, but no doubt you couldnt beat the outright power of a Turbo.

If i ever got to drive or go in a turbo then who knows................... :)

My comment was not directed at one nova specifically but as you have singled yourself out i think a elephants corn hole is far to nicer place for that sack of turd to have popped out of.

Nice edit did that quick!!! This tank being same one used in Gareth birches 12.1 second nova, only changed to meet wsscc regs but again you wouldn't know????? As for power please ...... Don't make me laugh, as for your engines don't get me started!!

So Churn the 3 cylinder that Mark Shead and Gavin saw run on the rollers did not produce more power than your 4 cylinder? Hmm interesting. Are you disputing the fact that it was a 3 cylinder or the accuracy of the rolling road? If its either i am sure you could enlighten Mark Shead as its the rolling road he uses all the time and i am sure he would value your opinion lol. Also interesting that you know all the facts about my engines, very few do, care to share them with me?

Its interesting talking to people that are aware what went on when your car was mapped at JDM and also notice what changes have been made, shockingly after been advised to make them. Still you will just lie about it all as you do and have done in the past:thumb:

rick your engine made more as it was on a much larger turbo than garys, his engine would be alot closer to your 3 cylinder output with a larger turbo

there are plent of ppl making 400 on there engines that could make alot more with just a turbo change

Out of interest was the map locked? Hmm thought not. See i am someone who listens to peoples advice and makes changes according to what i am told. If i was told by mark or my mapper my car was only mapped up to xbar and not to use it for anything really until the map can be finished properly i would not use it. This could be down to numerous things, possibly fueling issues, problems with inlet temps etc ect. However i would head the advice and do as they say...

Also Matthew is a friend of JDM and feels he can more than trust him with his engine and car. So maybe all you haters and slanders in here should piss off faster than a pig in tel aviv:confused:

why would the map not be finished, what made me laugh was when he said if it feels a bit flat let me know and i will send a modifed map down to you.....

there was nothing wrong with the inlet temps on my car nothing wrong with fueling only when the tank was low on fuel whihc is the same for any car, i was told to use the car and enjoy it whihc i tried to do! but again rick you were not there mathew wasnt there and nic wasnt there so the only people who knew what went on was johhny my brother and myself.

im sure he'll do a better job on mathews he isint a stupid man he clearly knows how to map a car but he failed BIG time and customer service was terrible after it melted. but again rick when you go aftermarket iwonder if you'll trust hom to map yours??????

well after going through my speed chart again i decided the 4.2 fd wasnt the best choice, dont know why i fitted it tbh as at 70 mph it was going to be at 4k rpm and a 7k rpm it would only be doing 125mph, not a very good top end speed tbh

so i decided to take it back out and stick the 3.74 in out of the f20 4x4 box so it will be sitting at 3.5k rpm at 70 mph and at 7k rpm it will do 140 so alot better

Helical gears are always in mesh and slide against each other hence being quiet. Straight cut transmit the load in one direction which make them more efficient. Downside is they smash together and fatigue quicker, does sound nice though!

not sure if the quaife will take the power but theres only one way to find out lol, yeah the i/c will sit niceley in the bumper cutout just like it did on ricks car, ive lookat at all sorts of different options for the servo problem but the only way round it is to go with a pedal box as i can then run the resovoirs remote and not have the bulk of the servo either

I think for the sake of changing a mount and spraying the engine bay you have really made a mistake not fitting the f28!
You have a fab engine and you will kill that box off And not see the best from it for example.......

Your ear muffs will be required still as the box will be noisy,
Awful cruising speeds,
Potentailly blowing up a very expensive gearbox (then fitting f28 anyway)
Etc etc

I think if you are looking around phase 2 specs the f20 isn't a bad choice but with your monster i'd be opting for the f28 for Full use of you motor!

Absolutly love this thread and work though I'm not knocking it just my thoughts

Keep up the good work and I hope the rest of the build stays to this very high standard and it goes smoothly for you

Thanks for your appreciation of the standard of the build

dont get me wrong i did think about using the f28 alot but in the end i opted to stay with the quaife for now to see how things go, mainly due to good f28s being thin on the ground to start with, having to cut off/weld mount on then have it painted and also i thought it might mess with the quaife gear assembley setup as thats been installed to work with the f20 (how the rod comes through the bulkhead etc)

but who knows, it might come to the point that i need to change to the f28 if it dont work out with the quaife box but ill tackle that when the time comes i suppose, i could maybe make use of the winter nights changing it lol

Yeah I realise why you went for the f20 but if it was mine ( which it isn't lol )
I would be using that expensive quaiffe box as some serious collateral towards a flly rebuilt diffed up f28 as it would be such a shame to see £1000 + blown to pieces.

Thinking on though I take it you don't use the car a great deal due to it's show car condition etc so it may well be ok for the odd blast,

I feel with track abuse it will be on borrowed time though but will be a brutal machine and fun whilst it lasts

Keep the pictures coming I love this thread

Wouldnt a Quaife straight cut box be better at handling power than a standard rebuilt Vaxhall box?

I know an F28 was designed to go with the turbo engine but surely Quaife with its notorsport heritage would be better???

the f20 sccr will not cope with 400bhp and the torque to go with it, i think quaiffe rate the f20 sccr kit at 200 ft lbs or somethign like that

mark beeson has had issues with his f20 sccr

while they last though i would take one over an f28 they sound awesome, as mathew said if it breaks he'll fix it and with all the bits being available from quaife it'll be an easy but expensive fix if it goes wrong :thumb:

f23 would be an option but needs hydraulic clutch and different mounts i think parts are still available from vaux for the box

I'm not sure how relevant ythis point is, but the strongest gears or shafts in the world, held by a weak casing will rip out anyway.

IIRC the other nova owner mentioned in here had problems with the quaife parts not the vauxhall ones used.

I dont know the parts that failed but he did mention it when he collected some bits from my house with Martin Weaver. IIRC SBS supplied the bits to sort it so he could say what was needed.

matthew172
14-08-10, 01:22 PM
imo the f28 is the undesputed strongest box out there (gear wise) but the synchros/bearings can be prone to failing from what i can gather, get a good one or somehow obtain the new parts and your laughing

i know its probs going to be sooner or later that the quaife will lie down on the job, maybe not (touch wood) but ill see lol

as others have said its not the outright power that kills boxes its more down to the levels of torque they are subjected to and in this case will be more than 200ft lbs, or i hope so, if it dont make over that ill be asking myself some serious questions lol

whats the compression ratio going to me mate?? thats a very hefty gasket??

such an awesome car as said previous, do you think the SCCR will cope ????

maybe if you keep the sccr can you get an f28 flywheel??? f28 pressure plate and run an f20 friction that way you'll have the pressure you need on the plate?

Thats what i ran on my old nova turbo with the same sccr box 300bhp, had several track days, 1/4 miles, plenty road miles and still going strong after around 4yrs, cant remember the make poss helix hybrid it was called

Dont worry bout the box mate, if it has been built right with good quality bearings ect then it will cope, unless driver error or beating the syncros.

Had no trouble with mine.
Was speaking to a guy after who builds race cars & he advised i should have before connecting the banjo's to cyclinders i should have filled them with brake fluid or i will have got so much air in system.
You using a 'Gunson easi-bleed'?
Made bleeding mine a breeze.

It certanly is the only one with a cross.

As it was Brett who did the cages & not Dave France and as you have his old car he wanted his to be unique & have the only one with a cross.

I did ask when he was having it done if he do one for me, but there was no chance!!

He wanted the only one & i suppose as he was getting them made it was his choice!

You'll need to use a pressure bleeder - like the gunson that uses the pressure from a tyre.
