to be honest your gonna get those sort of leaks on any old car its completly normal, if your wanting the squeaky clean look your going to have to use all new hoses clips etc. try a steam clean first see how it goes.

oh red :thumb: or anything but black

looks good, most novas have leaks tho tbh

I had a on the rad the other week Timmy.
Get yourself a little tiny bottle of rad weld first and see if that helps.

You can still replace the hose at a later date if needed... or when you replace the rad (if your doing that)

craig green
02-03-07, 11:21 AM
No dont use rad weld. It'll reduce the cooling ability of the rad & block the heater matrix etc. That pipe where the leak is is easily sorted, either with another stat pipe from a scrapyard or just cleaning the ends & use a new Jubilee clip with some grease on the screw threads to get it proper tight.

Black hoses would look cleaner I suspect.

Cant visit for a bit, I'm busy with my build. Progress has been awfully slow recently due to moving into our new pad. Its got a garage though!

Timmy

craig green
14-05-07, 08:16 PM
Dude it doesnt have to be dripping in chrome & Auto Glym to be there!

If anything it makes a good contrast if a car has some rough spots & then appears a while later with those blemishes gone.

Its an honest example that one IMO. Its aged well & doesnt hide anything.

Timmy

well once i had it up in and the air wheel off the hevens opened, i got soked lol but still carryed on what a bit or rain.
first snag i hit was that the brakes are on tight i mean uber tight. not a problem i'll use a hammer..... ok no luck fine i'll get some old handlebars for some extra push , crack...
oh bugger thats fecked it... not to worrie there halfords proffional range, soon swop it at work tmorrow, started trying to get some other bit off like tie bars and there all a pain to get to and involve taking other parts off. so i left it for today will try again soon.

quick up date . iv desided with somehelp , the engine is going to have to come out of cleaning and gear box work, so while its out im going to get the bay stich weleded.

02-08-07, 04:34 PM
Timmy;

I'd suggest renewing the bottom ball joints you have painted there, as they are cheap & worth renewing if old.

You have also painted the hub flange which is a bad idea. The surface that the back of the disc sits on should be free of any paint so the discs can sit totally flush. Just scrape it off.

Good idea on having the bay stitch welded. Put on a plate kit at the same time?

Timmy
02-08-07, 04:48 PM
yeah could put plate kit in but may leave that untill i put in the new lump in the furtuer. ball joints are being replaced. may do plate kit if someone has one cheap

Might as well do the plating kit at the same time or you will be getting the engine bay painted twice.

Were you trying to do a continuous weld? It's best to tack the corners down, then do little welds in between the tacks, then little welds in between those welds, the little welds in between.... and so on, until the whole thing is welded down.

A pro welder might be able to just run the welding gun around it but as a novice I would take at least 45 minutes on a piece that size.

Been working hard the last week or trying to get the engine done aready to go back in. just a reminder of
what she started like
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/Timmyj49gtr/DSC00029.jpg
i stripped all the parts i could off, water hose form the back of the block, starter motor, sloild water hose ,
exzorst manafold sump , then i painstakingly took the drill to the block with a wire brush and cleaned up all the
grime and dirt and oil form the block, i started off with some gunk engine degreaser and rined with a hose then
tryed it off and went to work with the wire brushes, then after 3 or 4 coast of hammerite smooth red paint
she looks really good i think
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/Timmyj49gtr/DSC00004.jpg
then started to replace the water hose after a good wipe and new clips
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/Timmyj49gtr/DSC00006-1.jpg
once she was all painted and almost finshed with the paniting me and
Craig from SBD motorsport started stripping the parts off which were going to be replaced.
rocker cover not replace just cleaned and panited by a Friend Graham big Thanck you to him
rocker cover gasket,
water pump
cam belt tensher
Cam belt
sump gasket
big end bearing were puled out along with rod bolts,
oil filer and plugs
Ht leads
Dizzy cap rotoery arm.
I think thats it but will add bit if i think of anything, started fitting that little lot
first was new big end bearings,
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/Timmyj49gtr/DSC00008.jpg
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/Timmyj49gtr/DSC00014-3.jpg
rod wnd with new bearing
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/Timmyj49gtr/DSC00015-3.jpg
rod end with assembele grease.
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/Timmyj49gtr/DSC00016-1.jpg
Counter sunk Cap end with new bearing and assemble grease,, ****er sunk for ARP rod bolts.
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/Timmyj49gtr/DSC00017.jpg
then fitted and touqed up.
Big Thanck you craig wouldn't of had a clue where to start i happy now she should be nice and strong for the furture

Once the Botten end was sorted we started on the cambelt. By we i mean craig, i help a bit and watched.
after some sanding and cleaning we poped in the new water pump from a 1.6 16v and went about fitting a solid tensherd for the cam,
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/Timmyj49gtr/DSC00005.jpg
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/Timmyj49gtr/DSC00020-2.jpg
after spend about 20mins looking or the touqe setting in the hayes we found them and had it all bolt up tighted and ready for the cam cover.
all this took a good 3 hour in my cold shed lol Thanck you again craig.
Most of the stuff done to the engine wont really make any difference on the road but more peace of mind when driving it hard and on track days.
one or two jobs left to do on the engine one being find a bloody arm and bolt for the oil pick up its in my shed somewhere......
once i found it pop it on along with sump baffling and gaskets, then pop on the nice clean rocker cover and cleaned up alternater.plugs
and leads and oil filter need tighting and then i need to fill it up and other odds.

Today i finily dropped off my shell for welding and stich welding. look very osrry for it self my car waiting to be wleding
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/Timmyj49gtr/DSC00024-1.jpg
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/Timmyj49gtr/DSC00028-1.jpg
big hole where the light should be and the empty bay.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/Timmyj49gtr/DSC00025-1.jpg
there something in there
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/Timmyj49gtr/DSC00021-2.jpg

so thie weekend is the start of a mathion to get my car ready in a week.

Timmy
28-10-07, 10:54 PM
firstly i tidyed out my shed today ready for the blitzes this week and well found i have loads of cars part and no room, fun.
trying finding a bolt i couldn't find on wensday and had no luck, then me and andy tryed sorting out a blowing fomr his car no luck,
been busy all day and not really got much done. but...... pop over to mate today and pick up my clean rocker cover
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/Timmyj49gtr/DSC00030-1.jpg
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/Timmyj49gtr/DSC00029-1.jpg
mmm shiney its been painted with cool paint so wont flake off me hopes,
so i set to work to get it fitted first clean out the holes no no crap dropps in to my engine
next cleaned up all the aprt which fit inside the cover
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/Timmyj49gtr/DSC00032-1.jpg
then cleaned up the head and wiped off all dirtuy and old oil
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/Timmyj49gtr/DSC00033-2.jpg
the set to work on
ftting the gasket
http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i196/Timmyj49gtr/DSC00034-1.jpg
on closer inspeshion i noticed there was groves on the cover so gently seated the gasket on the cover
and lined it up on the head started bolting it all down and couldn't have all the dirtybolts and clip all messy
so some degreasy and a cloth cleaned them all up and then the oil cap look sad, so pop that in as well and wiped it off
now here the finished result

does it have an idle valve ?? similiar to the vecs?
or could be a loose or damaged vacum hose maybe ??
have you removed the cable n checked the actual throttle bod moves freely etc ?

bet ya any money the bit you need is in this box of bits i had of you ....:(

craig green
18-12-07, 03:21 PM
Idle valve is tucked on the back of the cam housing.

Check any breathers or the inlet pipe for holes.

Failing that I have no ideas.
