Right.. I think I'm being bullied here

I'm 16, I'm at college training to be a mechanic (not that they teach me anything I don't know!) and I own a "currently" standard 1.2 J Reg Mk2 Nova 3dr hatch...

I'm being bullied by insurance companies...

A mate of mine is 18, he's been banned once for speeding and has 3 points again, idiot.. Anyway, he's got a 1.2 corsa, N reg 5dr, basically, a modern Nova... His insurance premium from Liverpool Victoria is like 1000 - 1100 quid, don't know exact amount... Another mate has a 1.3 escort (crap), and his premium quote (he's just 17) is like 1100 quid... And another mate, has got a quote for a 1.7 Turbo Diesel Astra Van, his quote came to about 1300 quid, hes also 16 (nearly 17)...

So how come, I'm getting quotes for like 1700 - 2100 quid for a 1.2 nova??

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Or any company suggestions for young drivers?

Any help is much appreciated..

Cheers,

Ste-V.

Direct line were friendly when i was looking for quotes, however they dont like mods.... Get a pass Plus when i was looking for quotes for an astra which i didnt get in the end the Pass plus knocked off ?194!!! Do you currently have a CBT as lots of companies let you use your 50cc NCB. Hope this helps

I think the fact of your age plus not actually having a lisence will be the major factors.

Plus postcode can make a big dent in the proceedings

He doesn't share exactly the same postcode, but were both in Blackpool...

Yeah I have a CBT at the moment, my bikes insured, can't wait to get off the damn thing :p

And I said I was 17 stan to get the quotes, and I told them I had a full license, did it on the internet...

I think I'll try ringing a few companies instead, get more joy out of them on the phone...

Cheers.

liverpool victoria are notourious for claiming different amounts tho iirc, also try at the end of the month as the sales person will knock more money off if you buy it as the want their comission - i was getting ?100-?200 knocked off last time i was looking

Novas are relatively expensive cars to insure, for what they are. Try getting quotes on the same vehicles as your friends as a comparison, and other small cars - think Fiat Uno's, Fiestas, 205's, Polos, Corsas etc. My mrs paid ?450ish on her 1.0 Polo, in her name, with a provisional license at 17 and her mum, dad, and me on the policy. We got a quote on my Nova saloon, as if it had a 1.0 engine in it and all the same driver details as the Polo - ?950.

Also, they may be fronting - putting mummy or daddy down as the main driver and them as the secondary. Not strictly legal, and you can end up with a whole lot of problems if you get found out. Also not to mention the lack of NCD - in two or three years time they'd still be paying the same amount when you're paying a few hundred to insure your car.

Try Admiral and Elephant with more experienced drivers on as second drivers. That will save a few quid, as can restricting the mileage. Are you getting TPFT quotes? And try upping the excess if you can afford to, you may find your mates have massive ~?1000 excess costs.

[edit]Isn't mechanic one of the occupations that inscreases your risk slightly?

yeah mechanic is a pretty bad occupation when sorting insurance, try wording it differently eg vehicle technician

lol im an engineer but i have also done electrical engineering in the past , but if i just select engineer then the insurance quotes are higher then if i selected electrical engineer , so im guessing a mechanic will be shafted lol

I don't tell them I'm a mechanic, I tell them I'm unemployed because at the moment, I'm working cash in hand for my uncle who is self employed... :thumb:

Thanks razor, yeah I am getting TPFT quotes, and I'll try changing mileage, excess etc.

Another question, how come injection novas seem to be like a few 100 quid more to insure than carbed ones?

also unemployed is sometimes considered high risk, theres every chance you cant pay your monthly fee and they dont want the hassle of chasing you up

Ah I see, I never thought of it that way... I'll have a play now :D

I put my occupation down as "Computer Services Manager" - which technically I am - as this is considered a "professional" career so is one of the cheapest occupations :D

The injection models tend to be the newer Mk2 novas. So I guess the insurance companies add on a bit more for that, suppose they must think the Mk2 is more valuable. Who'd steal an ugly Mk1 anyway lol :p

Aha.. Am I getting somewhere?

I just got another quote for the nova (with liverpool victoria again), except this time I typed in the registration instead of going through the menus, filled everything else out the same, and my occupation is 'Student'...

Result? TPFT with 50 quid theft excess - 1163 quid... Not too bad to be honest, I can live with that quite happily :thumb:

try putting your occupation as a student, if your at college and hold a student card, then why not use it to your advantage?
