Following on from my earlier thread "Project name to be confirmed"
http://www.novaload.net/forum/showthread.php?t=72621&highlight=project+asprin

I've now decided on the above name.

This weekend I spent the afternoon doing the following things.

1. Clean the car - just gave it a quick wash to see whats rust and whats dirt. The white has faded to a pretty powdery flat resembling crushed asprins! A few patches of rust here and there and a **** load of tar spots. I'll probably t-cut it panel by panel.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/Matt2107/Picture047.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/Matt2107/Picture048.jpg

2. Hoover the inside - Car has previously been used to carry Dogs and wet stinking fishing nets/bait... subsequently it absolutely stinks! First task was ditch the back seats as they were mouldy. Rear carpet went as well.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/Matt2107/Picture049.jpg

3. Fit K&N replacement element - left over from my old SR... made a small difference to induction "roar"

4. Fit new leads - these were still fitted to my brothers astra which is awaiting the scrap heap in the sky. Actually did make a difference to turnover... although that could just be all in my mind and the fact that they're blue. ;)

will look quite smart, determined to turn up to cheltanham ina nova arent you lol

Main reason for buying is because I'm sick of feeling left out at meets lol.
Seriously though... the mondeo is uber comfy but the smile on my face as I drove the nova home was worth the ?300 alone.

Another member for NovaMince.net LOL

Spend a bit extra and get a shedload of Megs stuff instead of cacky TCut. More expensive, but worth it and lasts a lot longer (the ?60 worth of kit I bought last spring is still only about 3/4 used now).

Matt2107
15-01-07, 10:50 AM
The GTE will definately be finished... cheers for the offer of help Timmy... I may take you up on that.

What with the wet and windy weather at the minute it kinda makes sanding fibre glass hard on my penthouse balcony... can't really do it inside as the dust gets everywhere. I will definately be over at the garage next weekend for a full days work though so expect some progress... the aim will be to finish off and fit one of the side skirts... and fit the xbox. :D

Progress update on project Asprin.

Tigra 5 spokes in black (50% complete) Sprayed up the second wheel
Replacement indicator (100% complete) fitted indicator from Lozzie C (thanks)

While replacing the indicator I noticed that the clip that fixes the bottom of the headlight in is broken so I'll try and pick one up from a scrapyard at some point... really not too bothered now though.

Attacked whats left of the boggo standard interior with some fabreeze as it stank really badly... also hung a vanilla magic tree from the shelf.

Had a slight concern that I have a leaky water pump but I've done 100 miles this weekend and I don't think I've lost any water.

Will probably do the cam belt and water pump soon anyway.

Those white headlamp clips break everytime the lamp is removed (typically). I bought 20 last time I needed one!

I had the headlamps and clips out loads before I MK1'd my SR

Maybe you are all hamfisted primates with a cranial capacity to rival that of a common chimpanzee?

Also my hazzard switch has been in and out loads and is fine *touch wood (nothing in a rover then LOL) Due to mates saying "does it really put the ignition lights on etc" lol

Matt2107
16-01-07, 11:34 AM
I think the clip broke when the indicator was smashed... he was probably smoking weed when it happened as his house stank.

craig green
16-01-07, 04:00 PM
Not a hamfisted primate at all. The clips are installed by locating them into the fr panel, then the upper edge of the lamp is lined up over the top 2 screw holes. As you do that the lower clip of the headlamp pops into the white clip & it all ends up in place.
When you remove it though, you have to pull the lamp out of the cip before you can get the top of the lamp free. The clips are brittle anyway.

Ash
16-01-07, 04:25 PM
the mk2 and mk1 clips are differant, mk1's dont break as easy, mk2 ones are just plain ****!

A little progress at the weekend.

Fitted new spark plugs and was absolutely delighted to see that the old ones were a nice tan colour on the end... Managed to give myself a nice King lead shock.

Also dug out some smoked side repeaters and rear lights that I had on my old SR.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/Matt2107/Project%20Aspirin%20-%20H936%20HCF/Picture051.jpg

During the week I sprayed up an old boot grab handle with some black hammerite... it was a bit of a test really to see how well the paint lasts. It seems to have gone on really well as expected.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/Matt2107/Project%20Aspirin%20-%20H936%20HCF/Picture052.jpg

Finished look from the rear end... remains of the merit badge should be removed next weekend.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/Matt2107/Project%20Aspirin%20-%20H936%20HCF/Picture056.jpg

Also I've rubbed down another tigra alloy so that should be black by the end of the week.

The lock mech is still grey and will stay like that for a while... but will eventually go black. As will some GSI bumpers and rubbing strips.

Matt2107
07-02-07, 07:27 PM
A little progress...

Third alloy is being painted and should be finished within a few days.
I've also sprayed up the grey petrol cap and will be tackling the door handles shortly.

It looks as though I may even spray the bumpers black.
This projecty is all being done on the cheap so I may stick with the standard bumpers... unless I can find some decent GSI kit ultra cheap.

Think I might try riveting with the hope of not needing to weld them in.
It's not like the back will be used anyway!

Decided to treat Project Aspirin to an Easter present this weekend.

Standard backbox

Peco BB2 removed from my GTE project
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/Matt2107/bb2backbox.jpg

This had been lying around for months so it just had to go on.
For a 1.2 it's rather noisey... at 70mph its a bit of a drone but its probably just because I'm used to the pea shooter exhaust that was on there.

Also managed to whack my thumb with a 3kg hammer!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/Matt2107/thumbinjury.jpg
Edit: Just before the purists among you start... I know its a mk1 backbox fitted to a mk2... better than nothing.

Some progress on a rainy bank holiday.

I wired up the rev counter on the sri dials (guide in technical http://www.novaload.net/forum/showthread.php?p=688743#post688743 ) and also fitted a white clock to match the dials.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/Matt2107/revcounter9.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/Matt2107/revcounter7.jpg

Might still paint the hands and time marks.... but I'm undecided as they do stand out more than they do in the pics.
I did a proper job of the white background as I used my airbrush rather than just some white sticker paper.

Last job to finish off the dials is to fit a black plastic strip along the front of the clear panel as there's some damage as you can see from the photo above.

I also unwrapped some 16v calipers I bought from Vernon... The plan is to paint them white with radiator enamel which should look nice behind the black five spokes.

Right I made the hard decision to break my GTE as the project was really going nowhere. I've worked hard on the bodywork and its a shame but I'm 25 now and not getting any younger.... Not only that the middle box on Project Aspirin decided to divorce the pipe and I didn't really fancy buying any new parts to fix it. I just wanna enjoy the nice expensive parts I've bought so the plan is to fit the following.

Smiths Oblivion 15" alloys.
KYB shocks and -35mm PI springs.
Full Leather GTE retrim.
Full Stainless mongoose exhaust
Sportex manifold
GTE engine and box
The hubs and steering knuckles as they have new calipers, bearings, track rod ends, bottom ball joints, Red Dot discs and pads.
Stereo and 6x9's
Toad AI606 cat 1 alarm and immobilser

Possibly the bonnet and spoiler.

Also gonna hang onto the delocked doors as they are pretty good.

Project Aspirin doesnt have the nicest shell but I don't mind a little welding in the future and will probably give it a Jamacia Yellow respray.

Friday was spent trying to get the GTE engine to run properly. Mixed outcome with this as it'll start and sounds ok but won't idle for long before stalling.

Saturday's progress was to strip the 1.2 out of Project Aspirin.

More progress shots from my bank holiday engine removal/fitting bonanza

First job was to set up camp on Sunday.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/Matt2107/enginechange001.jpg

Old hubs/steering knuckles needed removing from Project Aspirin. Mr Daddy lent a hand with this.... many hands make light work.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/Matt2107/enginechange003.jpg

GTE was rolled out and given a few minutes to reflect on the pending loss of its engine... looks a little sorry for itself.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/Matt2107/enginechange004.jpg

Back section of the Mongoose exhaust was removed.

Then cracks out the blow lamp.

Finally the hubs/knuckles are removed.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/Matt2107/enginechange008.jpg

Daddy Jefferies then turns his attention to the GTE hubs/knuckles

Hubs/knuckles were free from the GTE.

Andy and Daddy Jefferies remove the mounts from the top and secure the crane while I remove the lower engine mount.

Rear mount is a little tight and requires an angry beaver to undo the bolts.

Hubs/knuckles were now on.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/Matt2107/enginechange042.jpg
The reason for changin them was because I'd already fitted new cv joints, bearings, track rod ends, bottom ball joints, discs, pads, calipers and flexi hoses.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/Matt2107/enginechange046.jpg

Not many parts left to go

New radiator was fitted.

GTE shell was left sat on standard shocks and springs minus an engine.
If it wasnt looking sorry for itself before it certainly bloody is now.... looks more like a 4x4.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/Matt2107/enginechange048.jpg

That rounded up the work up until 6pm on Monday night.
All that remains to be finished is the petrol tank removed from Project Aspirin and swapped for the GTE tank along with the fuel pump. New fuel filter fitted. The exhaust needs to go on last and finally new fluids /oils to be added and the brakes to be bled.

Anyone know what this plug is for as I don't appear to have anything in the loom to connect to it. Can't see any left over leads etc on the GTE shell.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/Matt2107/enginechange047.jpg

Also appear to have this bit of loom (the plug next to the dark blue wire)
I think the dark blue wire is for the rev counter.
The light blue wire is a wire I already fitted for the rev counter when the 1.2 engine was in there.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/Matt2107/enginechange051.jpg
The loom naturally appears to fall towards the coil.

Answers on a postcard... actually no just make a post here!

Correct me if I'm wrong but is that not something for the oil pressure..

Bit of a ****ty day today... no pics either.

Got my **** out of bed and started fitting the fuel tank and lines from the GTE. Put on a new fuel filter while I was there.

Next job was the mongoose exhaust. Still love the build quality of this.
Also bled the brakes and changed the oil etc.

Then I came a little unstuck. The mounts for the fuel pump on the GTE were pretty shagged. The rubber cotton reel mounts are broken or badly perished, plus the actual bracket that attaches to the chassis is completely shot to bits. I'm kinda thinking about not bothering with it and buying a facet pump.

Any suggestions?

Facet pumps are low pressure so no good for what you need pal. Unkless you mount a facet in the back and run a swirl pot in the front with a high pressure pump feeding from that to the fuel rail.

The plug under the blue wire in the pic plugs into the gearbox and is for the reversing light. Hunt around where the passenger side mount bolts to the gearbox.

Cheers for the advice lads.

Gonna go with the original pump again now and pop to Vaux today.

Next bridge to cross is the wiring.

There's a multi plug with about 6 wires that comes from the ecu loom.
Anyone know what each individual wire is for?

Finally managed to repair my leather door cards that came as part of the retrim. I'd tried taping the leather to the back as this is how they were held on previously but it just wasn't happening. Quick dig through a draw and I found a staple gun with some really shallow staples. Job done!

Mucho thanks to Big_Vaux aka Rik for the free gsi handles/pockets.

That'd be great mate.

The weekends progress was a bit depressing.

Fitted the fuel pump mount parts that I ordered from Vauxhall (cost me ?20+ for the lot :( )

The old cotton real mounts were a ******* to get out so I ended up drilling straight through. Great plan... until I electrocuted myself on the drill. (It was a really old fashioned on and obviously not safe)

Then I came across a world of **** when all my fuel lines appeared to be leaking. Finally to top it off the fuel damper is now shagged.

Yeah... it's actually starting to look pretty smart.

Dawn crapped herself when I got electrocuted as it threw me backwards a bit and there was mucho swearing. :D
