Im new to the novas so i only just joined the forum. I have started work on a 1.4 sr nova on a h plate with the face lift. The plan is to fit a slightly modded c20xe (filter, cams, chip, 4.2.1 manifold) in to the sr, plus also strip it to its bones and strenghten the chassis and fit a cage with buckets. Looking forward to doing the work but might need some help on the way :D

at least you wont need to roll the arches lol

Is that cause of the lack of a n/s arch or the use of a space saver. The rims which are going on are ready to paint (tomorrow hopefully). A bit a met grey will be used me thinks. :)

Just thought i would let you know what were doing for shafts. Its would kill me to pay Near ?200 for a pair of shafts so i spoke to my mate who works in engineering. He has cut and welded both shafts for me. We have opted for equal lenght shafts to try and counter any torque steer the car might incure.

The welded section

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/12/35604532836.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=4318108)

Complete shaft minus boots and outer cv

how do equal lenght shafts work ?? surely you cant change the spacing from the gearbox to the hubs ?? or am i missing something ??

ashtal
10-01-07, 11:53 PM
In this pic
http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/12/35604532717.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=4318107)

You see the cast bracket. That just bolts to the back of the block and the shaft from it to the gear box is mucho thick so it wont twist like the other part of the shaft. Oh there not exactly equal length either, one is 310mm and one is 416mm but its better then the 660 of the normal shaft used in c20xe conversions!

The nova is turning out to be ALOT more work than i first thought. So much welding has been done and needs doing so progress looks slow, but its getting there.

Only worked on the front today but killed a little more rot.

Got the loom as striped out and the cage is properly mounted now. Its all ready for stich welding inside now. Should not take long to sort out the inside than we can get a bit of paint action.

i had some pics to put up but they got deleted so i need to do them again.

Here is a couple of pics of my front calipers and discs. The pads im using are black daimond preditor pads. the calipers were completely striped back and cleaned up to bear metal. Thought red would be a nice colour to go for, even tho the cav rims are not really going to let you see much of them !

Scene as I want the car to be as light as possible I spent most of Saturday removing unwanted items from the nova. I started with sound deadening and got a little more involved after a while.

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/2/4107264217.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=4741755)

The original idea was to make a flat surface to mount the internal fuel tank. I was going to use some steel but decided to use something a little lighter.

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/2/4107264348.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=4741757)

Yes, its part of a land rover alloy roof. The roof has got some strengthening braces though it so it’s light and strong enough to support the 5-gallon tank.

I also decided to remove all the brackets I didn’t need. Which includes: all rear seat mounts (two backrest, two backrest pivot points and 3 bench hinging points, every little counts! Plus I also removed and the old fuel tank brackets.

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/2/4107264519.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=4741760)

Looks odd at the mo but you get the idea.

On Saturday I also got chance to have a better look at the cage mounting points. I found out the cage didn’t fit cause the door bar bracket on one side was an inch to high! How it ever fitted in any nova I don’t know.

Anyway, this is a 3mm plate I made up to support the middle section of the 6-point cage.

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/2/4107264127.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=4741752)

Notice that only tacking has been done! When fully welded the original floor will be removed (to allow the nuts to be put on) from under the car and it will be drilled and plug welded to the inner sill for more strength.

At the front and rear mount I will be making a 10cm by 14cm spreader plate, which will be, seam welded to the body. I will also fix a captive nut to the front plate, as the nut would have to be going through a box section of the body.

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/2/4107264172.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=4741753)

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/2/4107264233.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=4741754)

The plates are yet to be cut as it takes so long to cut 3mm steel!

Thought I would get a few pics with the cage in situ.

Right, when the nova is done i expect low 14's, maybe even a high 13 down the pod ! My mate thinks this is a dream and will stuggle for high 14's. What do you think ?

Spec will be:
c20xe, courtenay cams, piper filter, fse valve, free flow (very free flow) exhaust, some kind of chip also.

Think its either a f13 of f16 cr box with a quick shift and equal lenght shafts and running on cavs slabs with kumho 45 pro tyres.

The car should also be very light, well compaired to a fully trimed nova.

Everyone knows how hard it is to get a good clean drivers door. I found a good clean door for ?30, which was a bargain ! But thought i would take a sander to the lower edge of the door to make sure there was no rust. I found filler and some small rot holes.

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/3/6911183590.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=4955840)

Scene as the door look like it was used for paintball practice i thought i would put a new skin on it. Cost ?40 for the skin and it was the last one in the country (so i was told).

This is what i found when i took the skin off:

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/3/6911172223.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=4955835)

Yep, rotton as f**k. Frame was rusty to but it all grinded up alright. Quick bit of etch and its ready for a skin.

Bish bosh bash

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/3/6911172111.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=4955831)

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/3/6911172266.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=4955833)

These pics are from the top of the door looking down towards the bottom (inside).

why not just bolt your harness to the floor in the boot like below, its a damn site easier then welding bolts to strut braces, and looks loads better imho

what harnesses are you using? as you could do with proper motorsport harnesses where you have to use the mounting eyes to clip them to (just look like a mini towing eye)

as in the "clip in" aircraft style harnesses

Im using 3 point sparco harness's. I really like the look when the harness comes off the rear strut brace, plus im incline to keep the belt central to the bucket seat to stop twist in an accident.

you'll do more damage to yourself by bodge so to speak fitting your harnesses to the rear strut brace (welded in or not) ONLY fit harnesses to a proper rear harness bar when the harnesses HAVE GOT the proper loop in the end of them or those funny little straps, almost like ratchet straps but not ;)

And that is speaking from experience of building, test driving and yes also crashing rally cars ;) (mostly peugeots tho lol)

Mike
19-03-07, 11:34 PM
by harness bar i mean this, the first part of the cage that those harnesses touch, uo would then loop the harnesses round it, tigthen them up and hey presto (that a proper 8 point cage btw ;))

I see what your saying mate, but i want to avoid the belt coming off at an angle like this pic

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/mikenova/Entire%20reshell/Picture150.jpg

Im no expert, this setup might be perfectly fine, but the belt is not central which makes me think it will turn your body in an accident. Im 100% certain the strut bace will hold in any kind of accident, in fact i would go as far to say that i would hang the whole car from it.

its not the strut brace you have to worry about ;) its the steel its attached to ;)

the angle of my harnesses in that pic have never caused me any issues lol, there FIA & ECC approved and designed to be fitted like that, so there is literally nothing to worry about lol

the car they came out of (my old SR) i had a rather hefty front impact and they didnt throw me sideways or anything so i trust them ;)

they would ill admit, but its getting them on there SAFELY thats the pain/issue

not putting your idea/s down, but do you think that at 30mph a welded on nut would retain your bodyweight x3 from going through the dashboards/windscreen? :wtf:

Best bet is having the belts the shortest distance, had a talk with a scrutineer and they advise a short gap due to the fact in an accident the belt has less chance of stretching which will cause possible injury.
but to be fair your set up looks solid and the belts look top notch.
Amazing preparing work always interested in this thread. Keep up the great standard!

The the car was all sealed up. I did want to keep the welds exposed, but i want the car to last for years to come so i sealed it to protect agains rot. I never thought it would take this much hard work to get the car to this point !

Rear legs !
This update was all done before the painting but forgot to put it on the thread !

From first inspection the rear arches were solid ! Little did i know someone had bodged in some plates in the arches. When i say bodged, i mean the plate was held only held by the sealer and what can only be discribed as bird s*it of weld. So, i started cutting out rot, lots and lots of rot ! When the rot was gone, i was left with these very big holes !

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/3/8119003455.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5051646)

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/3/8119003597.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5051647)

After i cut out the rot i got a grinder to it all, nice clean metal http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

Scene as that part of the rear arch is double skined i had to use some real heavy duty metal. Heres a pic to show its width:

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/3/8119003749.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5051651)

As you can see, it as thick as f*ck and will provide more than enuf strenght http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/nod.gif

Anyway, heres the plates welded in. I still got to cut the bottom off and seam weld that edge. Got to put a couple of little plates elsewhere in the rear arches aswell.

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/3/8119003683.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5051649)

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/3/8119003561.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5051648)

Should get the underside of the car all stonechipped at the weekend, then i will be putting bits back on the shell !!!!!!!

Got some more done to the nova on sat morning. Thought i would start with the wiring loom, now i didnt strip ther nova so i was worried about finding all the right places for everything, but the loom is SO simple it only took a couple of mins to find the rought layout.

Then it was a case of putting in the pedals, heater box, dash, etc etc.

I wanted to get the dash in in the moring so i could get this little beasty in:

First job of the day was to finish the welding on the rear inner arches. Had to finish cutting the uber thick plates i part welded in and put a couple more plates in as well.

welded:

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/4/11011034587.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5274265)

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/4/11011034897.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5274269)

With all the welding now done on the car (yes all the wlding is done !!!) i started to prep the under side and all the wheel arches for a nice thick coat of stone chip. I used some sickaflex to seal some of the joints.

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/4/11011034856.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5274270)

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/4/11011035279.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5274276)

With all this done it was ready for the stonechip. Now the last time i used stonechip some of the over spray drifted to a freshly cleaned nissan, it took me hours to clean it all off ! So i made my self a little "wall" to stop this happening again !

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/4/11011035384.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5274277)

Now way it would get over that bad boy !!!

So, then the stonechip to do. I know most people love the wheel arches to be painted and all but i think its far more practical to paint them in stonechip.

Underside all done:

Little update:

Got my hubs back the other day from the machine shop http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif

Had the back of the cav hub turned down to the exact same size as the nova hub (shaft and steps, to fit in the carrier) plus i also turned 3 mm off the front of the hub to get the right caliper clearance.

Save myself alot of money, as long as they work !!!

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/4/11517173896.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5319274)

even powder blasted them aswell http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

The shaft lenght has not been changed from the cav. I have been told i need a 2mm spacer, where should it go !?!

Is the 2mm spacer to prevent the Cv joint from breaking under full lock and load? heard some guy saying that to me but was not too clear as to what it does?

Started stripping the engine to give it a tidy up before fitting. First i had to get it in a nice warm place to work. http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/4/11817334176.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5343030)

Im only stripping it to paint the block and tidy a few bits and bobs, not going to crack it open. Well, i am fitting some courtenay cams but thats it !

Nice little surprise, coscast head:

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/4/11817334443.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5343034)

Nearly stripped, but i run out of time again.

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/4/11817334265.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5343032)

Could someone tell me where to do the breather mod on the rocker. Could copy my pic.

http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/4/11817334276.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5343031)

I plan to paint the engine and box both in black smooth hammerite. Will the heat burn off the paint, has anyone used it to do there block before ?

Breather mod-
Remove the plate out the cam cover, and drill holes in it to allow oil to drain back into the head/cam area instead of getting forced into the throttle body.

Just take the plate off and cut off the last part then put that back on. Don't forget to clean off all the sealer thats left (very important).

Its basically what SBD tell you to do here (http://www.sbdev.co.uk/Info_sheets/Oil_systems/2.0L%2016v%20SBD%20Cam%20cover%20breathing%20modif ication.htm). I like to keep the plate bolted on in three places instead of just the two.

Im sick of the site of smooth hammerite ! So meny parts to paint. Been busy painting loads of parts over the last few days. The engine block is all painted and the cams have been removed so i can swap them with the courtenay cams from my other car.

One of the bits i painted was the g/box:

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/5/12114412422.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5371008)

And more g/box bits:

all done:

I also gave the hub carriers a lick of paint. Hopefully all the suspension parts will be finished for the weekend. Want to get the nova on its wheels and the engine in !

Been really busy on the car all this week, trying to pull my finger out to get it ready for pv ! Been doing some real sh*t jobs like rubbing down springs and cam covers etc etc

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/5/12410204976.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5386872)

The paint work is only to freshen up all the parts im useing, the billies needed a good tidy up. You can probally see from previous pics the engine covers were also looking sad for them selfs. anyway, im happy with the results:

Pulley:

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/5/12410204972.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5386875)

Right, this pulley is a right **** ! I was scratching my head for nearly 45 minutes. The TDC mark was not on TDC. Only after i removed the pulley i saw the the inner pulley (the toothed bit !) was sittin in a diffrent place to the outer pulley. So i set it to the inner pulley and marked the outer for future refrance.

Finally just a pic of my equal lenght drive shaft setup, looks like new !

Next on the jobs to do was the engine. The engine is from a 1992 cav gsi with just over 110,000 mile on the clock. I bought the whole car years ago, only got it cause it was cheap. It sat on my mates drive for over a year and i nearly scrapped it ! Anyway the car was full of old recipts and i found out the engine had had a ?1500 rebuild only 14,000 mile ago, plus a coscast head was fitted. So its a good little lump to be putting in the nova. First job was to tidy the block up abit:

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/5/12410204999.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5386874)

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/5/12410204924.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5386873)

Cant beat a bit of old black smooth hammerite. Next i fitted the f16 box, never had much luck fitting vauxhall gear boxes but this one slipped strait on ! Then i was time to fit the newly retrived courtenay high torque cams. I had fitted them to my other c20xe in my astra convertible, but it seemed my benificial to fit them in the nova. Theres a massive diffrance over the standard cams aswell ! Then it was just a case of fitting the new belt and timing it up (F*cking pulley). Time to chuck the covers on, do you like my choice of colour !?!

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/5/1241020499.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5386879)

Then see was ready for insersion !

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/5/12410205068.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5386883)

Filler, filler and more filler ! Got most of the filler work done this weekend. The bonnet has been stored for years and had lots of dents in it. It also had some nasty fillerwork in to to so had all the old filler out and put some quality stopper in it. The passenger door got delocked and i skimmed the whole door due to ripples al the way through the door. I was well surprised as the door had original paintwork ! The boot also had some dentage, so i sorted that at the same time.

Looks awesome matey!

You're supposed to heat proof the manifold before wrapping it though I think....

Had a right **** fitting the wings on saturday. I was going to leave them off and fit them after painting but i had to fettle them a bit to make them fit, plus i want to seal them up to stop the corrosion.

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/7/18817535664.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5923832)

Had to put a couple of skims in as the wings are pattern and were an ar*e to get fitting right !

As im going away on holiday on tuesday i wanted to get all the bit of out the work shop, so i chucked them all on the car.

The end is in sight !

Still having an **** with the seat subframes. Thought i would buy 2 new ones for ?40, which i think is expensive but i was getting sick of not being able to fit both seats.

Any way this is the gap on the passengers seat frame to body:

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/7/18817535730.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5923837)

Its got loads of room and travels forwards and backwards without fowling. http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/nod.gif

On the other hand the drivers side frames does not fit. Thge runners fowls here (see the scrathes !):

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/7/18817535731.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5923836)

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/7/18817535768.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5923835)

Its like the frame need to be moved an inch or so. Plus the new frame id bent aswell so that wont help !

Any ideas whats wrong ? Its a standerd nova mk2 sr seat frame so im told so it should fit.

WHY WONT IT FIT !?!?! http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/mad.gif

Can I suggest buying the proper Corbeau subframes to fit them - my Forzas went in with relative ease and only minor fettling and slide back and forth perfectly.

Mike

meh my buckets fitted perfect with SR subframes and Sparco sliders

ashtal
22-07-07, 06:38 PM
OH, so you fit corbeau sliders to the sr frames !?! But still the sliders and frames from the standard car should not catch !

Does anyone know if all gte gsi sr sri etc etc of any age all have the same subframes ?

WTF !!!

Right, got a opel gsi steering wheel to put on the car and i noticed that the wheel sit a a right funny angle ! Is this normal, looks well odd. The column might have a little adjustment in it but not enought to get the wheel strait. Having never driven a nova its not something i have seen .

Got some more toys. Got an exhaust expander for the back box and some surface mounted aerocathces.

These aerocatches are well smart, well over engineered to. Bit of a hit or miss afair to getting them located right tho ! I have tryed to keep on side of the catch parallel to the vents in the bonnet.

Dodgy cutting with massive air saw !

Big hole, no going back now.

Catch in place.

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/7/21012434798.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6145688)

Quite symmetrical

http://img2.putfile.com/thumb/7/21012434888.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=6145689)

Also got round to trial fitting the strut brace with the power cap, Its a tight fit !

Keeping with the rally theme i have decided to fit a pumped extingusher. It turned up today. Do i put one pull handle in the dash and one near the scuttle panel ?

Also where should i aim the 2 jets !?! both at the engine or should i point one at the internal tank !?!

I want to avoid rotton doors on this motor so decided to stone chip the lower parts of the door.
