I went to sunny Kent on Monday to collect my new purchase.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/RJM25R/20ba6edb.jpg

Set off at 5am, Mikey collecting me in his Vectraand then had a pretty uneventful trip. M62/M1/M25, Dartford crossing, and Bens house. Sounds easy but a little tiring!

Bit of a delay at Ben's house while he gives me the (hundredweight!) of receipts and bills for wheels, brakes, exhaust, alarm, tyres, respray, re-respray, re-re-respray (:D) and practically every part ever purchased! All old MOT's, corroborating mileage, every tax disc and MORE receipts!!

I phoned my insurers to confirm mileage (it's a reduced mileage policy!) and set off back towards the motorway.

We went under the dartford tunnel and hit the M25 and an hours worth of traffic jam!!! No matter, joined the M1 and hit the first trauma of the journey!

Mikey's weak bladder and growling stomach! We pulled over at services for an offal burger, laughing at the noise the green missile makes!

Refuelled, we got back on the M1 and 180 miles from home, DISASTER!!!!!

As I sat in the outside lane, at about 80mph, the heavens opened and a sudden shower appeared from nowhere! I flicked on the wipers and.......

F U C K! They didn't work!!!!

Slowed down to 50-60mph, sat behind mikeys vectra for 8-10 miles to the next services, contemplating the long trip home on the back of the AA flatbed.....

I checked the fuses, relay was clicking and the horn worked (shares a fuse with the wiper!) and was about to speed dial the AA but had a look under the scuttle! The linkage had come off the spindle and some judicious use of Mikeys magic pliers (Already used on some coathanger to make an emergency exhaust hanger for his Vectra!) managed to twist the linkage into position. The wipers were slow, but they worked, and thats all that matters!!!!

Back on the motorway, carried on untile we hit more traffic on the M62 near Leeds, eventually getting back to Oldham at 5.15pm! 12 hour stint!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/RJM25R/39c751d2.jpg

Car outside my house, filthy after 5 hours on the road!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/RJM25R/0821101d.jpg

My son with the car-he affectionately knows as "Noisycar"

Tuesday morning, I felt the car needed a wash. Spent 2 hours on the car, it it still very dusty inside, the downside of very little use I suppose....

Performed the first of many planned mods. Fitted the single wiper off my purple nova, which was made up from a brand new linkage with a secret ingredient to make the full sweep.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/RJM25R/0f4eb1cf.jpg

Old linkage and arms removed

New straight arm and longer blade

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/RJM25R/e781d17d.jpg

New linkage almost in position

So then the car with the sigle wiper, checked the sweep......

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/RJM25R/8801bc51.jpg

Unsure TBH if I prefer centre park or side park? Waiting for the cap to arrive for blanking off the spare hole and also removed the full sized front number plate.

I also fitted a shorter roof aerial and then took the car for a run down the motorway

Drove to see Fearless, to have a chat about some subtle aesthetic underbonnet mods. Don't wanna give too much away but add this
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/RJM25R/5c453a40.jpg

to this
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/RJM25R/a9b1ecde.jpg

add some shiny stuff into the mix and some removal/neatening up of the wiring and I'm hoping for a near concours quality engine bay!

New air filter will be fitted, but i'm a little worried about the amount of water that comes through the carbon fibre bonnet vents onto the air filter and the Bailey tank, Any ideas how to reduce it????

And one last picture, car with my new Touran and my missus Beetle....

Awesome car, so thats why you wanted pics of it the other day ;) Lol

Colour looks great.
I prefer the wiper parked on the side, thats where i have mine parked.

Where are you getting a cap from to block the other wiper hole?
I just tigersealed a rubber grommet over the 2nd wiper plastic cap thing, and then tigersealed that over the hole.

Blanking gromet-

Go to vauxhall, ask for a blanking plug for Corsa B roof aeriel hole. ?3.50, has a bolt on the back of it. Paintable body colour, and Voila! Cheers to Fearless for that!

But its illegal to have it parked in the middle.
Having it parked on the passenger side is legal.

I might go and get myself one of those grommets from vauxhall, and get it sprayed up white, should look better than a black one.

RJM25R
19-05-06, 05:32 PM
I haven't decided yet..... I could sell the parts off my purple one for more than I have spent on this car, thus breaking even (in my twisted mind! LOL!)

Having a company car, my missus' beetle, K95, and my CBR600 makes another car a bit pointless really!

Also, insurance has come as a bit of a surprise on this valver!!! It used to be cheaper before I was 30, and all insurers have said "yeah, we've had a lot of claims on these recently" even though i want a 3,000 mile a year policy with ?500 excess locked in a garage with cat1/cat2, snap off and 9 years NCD!

God knows what they'd want for the other one if i ever finish it!

Since I started work at VW, my purple one hasn't really progressed how I would like because I work 6 days and when I'm off, i can't be ars3d going to the garage working on the car!

Matthew, I was getting quoted ?600-800 to insure the car. I live in OL1 which is allegedly in the top 10 of the UK's high risk post codes!

After phoning 43 (seriously!) insurers, I got it to ?422 fully comp, protected, covered for ?5000 agreed value based on the mods with Performance Direct because I've had insurance with them on and off since 1998.

It's raining today so no mods i'm afraid. Gonna go into work instead!

Briscoe16v, if you've got plenty of cash, make me an offer??????? Car is mint and has 12months MOT and 12months tax.

Rick,

I was thinking about this problem with water getting through the bonnet vent on mine.

Why not put some clear perspex on the other side - spaced to keep the air flow around the filter but the water will then just fall down behind the headlamp???

Looking good anyway - nice to see you're "keeping the faith" - Not keen on the gold wheels - anthracite is the way!!!

Yeah, to cut a long story short for the people who are new-ish, I "knew" the car through the North West VPCC/PNG when it was built by Garry Hope. Garry spent nearing ?20k on the car, then sold it to _BEN_ who had it for 3-4 years but due to engine probs (car had a mega high spec engine)http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/RJM25R/6d1c9a3b.jpg

he didn't use it much.

I am part-way through a mega-rebuild on my own Nova,

and was looking to buy Nick Caro's car when I saw it for sale at ?6000, but somebody offered more money than me and _BEN_ offerd K95 at a stunning price. Suffice to say, I have receipts for paint on the car, that add up to more than I paid for it!

I will put up a full spec when I get chance.

IMHO the vinyl is well below acceptable condition. You can see where the "swillington autocare" sticker has been removed, and there is some fading as well. It may look perfect on the pics, but I can assure u it is not.
I would have probably accepted keeping it, but the 16v badge is not to my taste, nor is the VAUXHALL decal but once removed, they will leave "shadow" of where they were, like the "swillington....." has done.. There are also signs of trapped moisture, and I am thinking of rust prevention.....

Sorry to all u vinyl buffs, but it's gotta go....

Think of it as weight saving LOL!!

CG

Jules
25-05-06, 11:47 PM
Removing it makes it look like a half ****d GSi replica attempt!

If you are removing it then get some more and replace it! GSi's look so much better with the vinyl on the B pillars and tailgate.

The 'VAUXHALL' badge on the right was put on the later ones instead of the Griffin in the centre of the tailgate so imo should be put back aswell, along with a GSi badge on the left.
But that's just me.....

Rick Draper
26-05-06, 09:02 AM
You could always go to a sign writing place like Keith did and have a new one made up and let them fit it if you wanted? I myself am not ****d about the vynal, its not rare 12" so whats it matter.

craig green
26-05-06, 10:05 AM
Definately recommend a sign writer puts it on if anyone does get new tailgate vinyl.

I have to admit I much prefer a GSi or GTE to be wearing the pillar & tailgate vinyls. The one I got only had the GSi sticker on. Griffin stickers are 10 a penny on ebay aswell.

Car is still with Fearless..... Hopefully collect tomorrow...

In the meantime LEE H gave me a fuel filler cap.... Originally a silver Novatech item in a little rough condition.... Pics off Novatech

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/RJM25R/2ca5cdc8.jpg

Painted it Vauxhall Mica Graphite (dark grey with gold pearl) and was gonna get the wheels to match, but decided it was too dark and rbbed it down again....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/RJM25R/26513a72.jpg

Settled on Vaux Mistral Grey and re-painted...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/RJM25R/134d8ff2.jpg

Gonna get my wheels done the same, and possibly the rocker cover and other bits under the bonnet.... Needs new stainless allen headed bolts to finish off but you get the idea!

Painted half a bar off my rollcage in Mstral as well, to see if i like it...

[quote=RJM25R]Yeah, to cut a long story short for the people who are new-ish, I "knew" the car through the North West VPCC/PNG when it was built by Garry Hope.

Got the car bacjk this morning, some quality work by Fearless Motorsport...

When I got the car, I was unhappy with how scruffy and random the wiring seemed to be, and I asked Dave (Fearless) what he could do to improve...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/RJM25R/85fd252e.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/RJM25R/fa365244.jpg

He suggested cutting and re-routing as much wiring under the bonnet as possible, and re-looming with a black nylon braiding like this...

I see you've wired it in with the big round plug!

I'd didn't use that as you don't need all the wires and use this plug a little further down the line instead. It sits inbetween the round plug and the engine loom.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/TheSimps/Nova/Mechanical/ConnectorXE-Starter.jpg

This plug has all the wires in it you need to get the engine wired up. Helps to tidy things up!

I see your not looking at getting a power cap from courtney then? Personally i think the boxes look better to some extent but they do look a bit standard?

RJM25R
27-06-06, 08:36 AM
Power caps can gain a couple of BHP but lose bottom end torque so i'll stick with the SFI for now.... I fancy some Weber 45's (Did u hear me Fearless???!!!)

Anyway, back to the engine bay.... Dave cleaned out the breather hoses and replaced them, and fitted new jubilee clips wherever possible. The braiding was used wherever possible including the wiring to the horn (!!!)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/RJM25R/9026f5a2.jpg

You can see how the wiring is much neater, and the top rad tpiece has been spaced underneath to look "cleaner"

Better off PM'ing Fearless... I don't know if he'll see it on this thread...

The reason we didn't put the wiring into the wings is because It's only a go-between car till my other one is finished.......I might put 45's on it as well....

Its looking really good mate, such a nice car!!

Well, I already had the blue hoses for the other nova (obviously, the car will NOT be purple when it appears again! Hint!) and all the other bits so I thought why not use them? I've got carbon door cards/cage/carbon Cobra Suzuka's/Sparco 4 point 3" harnesses in my garage that might end up in K95 yet.....

K95 will never be a daily driver. It has poly bushed front end and competition spec engine mounts and is very noisy.... I have a company car and my wife has a new beetle and I've bought a motorbike as well, It's just a toy for when I'm bored and wanna go baiting Subaru drivers!!!

When the other car is finished I will decide what to do. My son has asked to keep it, but he's only 8!

Would be a shame to see it change hands again but If you are re-building yours then I suppose there is not much point keeping it.

I might have to put 195's on just to get on the road. Starting to $hit it now for TRAX next sunday....... Lets hope they fit over the brakes :-**

Need to remove the vinyl (shut up! LOL!), fit new stereo (the kenwood mask is 10 yrs old and jumps every time I sneeze!) paint the brakes, new rear lights, MORE shiny under the bonnet, paint some bits under the bonnet, fit my MAX POWER stickers, kingdom front bumper, led washer jets and alloy rear spoiler..... Do you think a cossie rear woing would look out of place?????

Carbon seats will look good with carbon door cards and cage...... But not till after xmas! Gonna take K95 off the road for some TLC from October....

The wheels were pretty widespread back in 1998 when the purple one was being built, but 7x17" et49mm were very rare. I sold them to a lad who had them polished and fitted to a Corsa. It's NOT black with a fleck in it at all mate. It's a textured, black finish as noted on the thread picture

4-2-1 manifold shud give more clearance.

SBD type-c manifold gives more power though, that's why it's fitted.

Well, i can't find any wrinkle paint at such short notice, so I'm definitely gonna leave the rocker cover green for Trax, and poss leave the vinyl/rear lights until after Trax.

I'v been doing some last-minute underbonnet work. The rocker cover bolts were badly corroded, and it desperately needed a manifold heat-shield (pic underbonnet when I got it in May!)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/RJM25R/acb7f7df.jpg

Unfortunately, 4 of the rocker-cover bolts were jammed in tight, and all I succeeded in doing was rounding the heads!!!!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/RJM25R/DSC00690rust.jpg

So had to use a counter-sink to remove, and after an hour (!!) finished fitting the bolts!!!!!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/RJM25R/b4a31a27.jpg

Also fitted a Samco front breather (considering the 2 rear breathers from SFS/Roose/Samco but they're ?70-80-i'm not sure if it's worth it!)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/RJM25R/31acf7da.jpg

Going to work in a minute for a Valet and Supaguard so I'll post up COLOUR pics later with the wheels on!!! LOL!!!!

O, and keep the boot vinyl! Lol

yes. If you are temted to lose the vinyl. Atleast do up another tailgate. The vinyl is no longer available from GM. Peeling it off would be a sin of SuperNova proportions.lol

RJM25R
03-09-06, 08:21 PM
I think matching the paint on a new tailgate would be more of a sin than removing vinyl!

On another note, I've just returned from Trax and the car was on Total Vauxhall stand and was extremely well received!!!!!

i suppose its different/original but sometimes that is not good thing!
imo opinion you shoul of done the rl7's anthracite

i didnt like it, but now everyone said the same (paint the old wheels dark) i like it for being differant, i do agree with the side skirts tho, some thing needs sorting with them, maybe remove them? or smooth them in the the body work (painting would be a nightmare, im guessing), or i think it the novadose ones that look alrite?

 wow

always loved that nova as it was but now it just looks so right, loveing the new rims on it, fantastic choice of colour and rim ect.

only thing that would improve it is the stretched tyres you were after (cant you tell i love euro stylee lol)

top notch kidda :thumb:

I understand but I'm a leader, not a follower. Maybe you think I should've got Speedlines? But I need to INNOVATE, not IMITATE

i think them wheels spoil the whole car.

But the RL7 anthracite thing wouldn't have looked good enough for me.

Each to there own & that, but i think they look sh*te !!

Fair enough comment, but everyone at TRAX said they looked amazing (to my face, that is!!!)

The reason I decided against anthracite wheels is because it's been done before and I love the euro theme. In fact, I have a set of even more extreme wheels in mind for next time!

All i can say really is thanks for the comments, good and bad.

Please vote on the poll I've posted

Agreed, looking much more euro now, which is unique in nova styling.

I'm going totally Euro on my Black GSi.
