well we arrived late (yes theres always 1! well 2 in this case lol) we went in to sign on! we were told to choose a group fast or slow as we we were all going to go intermidiate i figured ah they will all be in the slow group should of checked first  FAIL all the novas were in the fast group aka gold group

but wasnt all bad was just there were absolute beginners in mine and wills group and was a bit of a pain sometimes! but it meant i could watch the novas in the other group coming doen the pit straight, first things first massive respect for the balls out maxcimum attack ollys gives his car was awesome to watch it skating round the pit straight scrabbling for grip,

skidmarks nova was impressive as was oli d's, olly's and nathans the tigra jonlems and gav's beast made me laugh as soon as i saw it when we were unloading wills car opf thr tailer it rolled past with a MASSIVE WOOLWORTHS sticker on it fell about pmsl :D lol

first session was ok was very wet and slippery redgate wass interesting the first time i went into it expecting there to be more grip craners was the best part for me 'old heirpin' was very slippery all day just meant side ways action my the car alweasy pulled its self straight, first sesion did a 3-5 laps and then came in checked car over gear change did feel a bit funny nothing obvious so i thought 'itll be rite' 3 laps in to the second secont my cav internal shifter snapped  so got towed in and i was ready to call it a day!

olly h came over and said well find a welder ididnt fancy my chances of inding a welder on a track day after we asked a few people we spotted an arc weled in the corner of one garage olly ran over and asked the guys if we could use it and the next ting i was running up to the garage with a welder will f's face and my brothers face were both a pciture

where the fcuk did you find a welder? lol

10 mins later linakge is welding up and refitted and i magend to catch the last 3 laps of my session :thumb:

nova pushed in to garage whilst olly and myself run round trying to find a welder

its the first time i have driven the nova with the cav internal shifter the new front springs and the new 450lb rear springs first session the shocks were set 1/2 way betwwen soft and hard bu ti was gettign a fari bit of understeer so i soften the shocks right of to softest settings and wow  what a difference it was like a different car flet so planted and sure round craners was able in my finaly sesion to do craners flat out in 4th no backing off the braking and going side ways through the 'old hairpin' was awesome BIG SHOUT OUT TO TRACKDAYNOVA for the advise of the rear spring poundage etc :thumb:

the car did develop a slight oil leak from what looks likely to be the sump gasket but its not to bad,

and one final picture of my nova after a long 2 30 hr drive up there 30 or so laps on track a welded up gear selector and a about half a ton of mud from the debris on craners by the looks off things form gav jonlem and rexy lol :thumb: its ready to travel back :D

I think my combo deserves a mention too - a comfortable 70 mph all the way there and back, with only 0.2 litrers of gerabox oil and half a clutch!

XE Combos are the best way to tow!lol

First off I'm so glad I came! It was an awesome day, mainly due to the people that were there, was great to meet you all!
The trip started on saturday for me, I had to drive my car up from my term-time address in Southampton, to my parent's house in the Midlands. The journey was going to be an unpleasant 2hrs at the best of times but turned into 3hrs+ due to flooding and tailbacks on the M40
I was fortunate enough to have a piggy back to the circuit on my mates ghetto transit recovery truck on Sunday, so after a 5.30am start i arrived snug and warm :p First job was to unload the nova into a garage, where Olly (Trackdaynova) and Stuart (SMCGSI16V) had already set-up camp.

Olly had brought along his airbox, which was fitted to my car for the day (Cheers dude!). This kept me under the noise limit, until later in the day! The first session was a complete joke for me, the track was very greasy and I was running in R888's, i also didn't realise until after the session that I was running my dampers on hard  It was like ice skating and barely a lap went by without some form of slide. I couldn't keep up with Adam or Stuart, so no chance with Olly lol

I softened the dampers off for the rest of the day and things improved a lot. The weather stayed cold and dry, so by the afternoon a dry line was appearing. Unfortunately with the dry line comes the oppurtunity to use more revs/throttle. This led to me being black flagged for noise on two occasions and having to leave the track :( The second time I had been warned to keep the revs down, but when a chance for a tussle with Olly arose, the red mist came down and I was instantly flagged lol

Olly was definately a little teensy weensy bit faster on the day, but its certainly not over yet ;)

Here's my first ever in-car and youtube vid!
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=eJYhUNFZT94

Highlights of the day for me were
1. The synchronised spinning of Rexy and Jon/Gav in my rearview mirror down through Craner curves
2. The manic multiple spins (4+) of Jon/Gav at the bottom of Craner curves, it was hilarious to watch!

Think Mr H's next investment should be 4wd to help with traction on the gravel lol

lol what a battle that was, fantastic day! good write up mate :thumb:

I will host the last session vid of mine first too, simply because of our battle, loving my sideways on power coming out of the Esses, and my detour on Redgate lol

Wicked vid Oli, the first of many many more I hope :)

im not to clued up on trackday sessions, but why was you getting black flagged and having to slow right down as you did?
exellent footage btw:)

dhdev (Oli)
15-12-08, 11:47 AM
My car was too loud. They have a drive-by noise limit of 98db, which is measured by microphones situated at various points around the track. I was fine until the last couple of sessions of the day when it had dried out and I was able to open it up!

He made too much noise. The black flag means "you're off, take it easy and enter the pits next time round, let everything pass you and don't get in the way."

He made too much noise. The black flag means "you're off, take it easy and enter the pits next time round, let everything pass you and don't get in the way."ive heard of making to much noise before on track through magazines etc,how come this be,sorry if i seem to be spaming this thread, but its highly unlikly you could be making more noise than a btcc?and so what if the noise is loud?
the more i watch the vids the more id love to take the old girl on track for a couple of laps:D

dhdev (Oli)

Local busy bodies who buy houses near to racetrack complain about noise pollution :tard: So racetracks have to limit the noise except for a certain number of days per year.

its even worse when you consider it has a cherry bomb exhaust :wtf:

lol that'll be me then, you lot wake me up every weekend with your loud 6 million rpm engines. Last I heard some stupid women was complaining (an thats about it) thats why I was removed off the track. Thing is I could go up an down her street wheel spinning and revving with no problems. Surely thats more annoying for her?

Was an awesome day out, cant wait for the next :D
Arrived about half 7, and met up with Nath, Skidmarkz etc.
Got a pit garage, said hello to a few familiar faces, and then went to sign on and for the briefing.
Got signed on into the Gold "fast" group, and then went to sort the car.

The day was split into 30min sessions, which is quite long tbh.
As always i had no car trouble in any of the sessions , the first 3/4 sessions were slippy as fook, understeering like fook. So much so that i actually kept up with Oli's light weight beast for a few laps as he struggled for grip :D
It seems the driver of a MR2 got slightly annoyed getting overtaken by Clio's and 1600 nova/corsas too,Lmao.

Quite amusing sitting behind Jonlem and Gavs tigra for a few corners too and watching it dance,Lol
Also managed to stay pretty much side by side with Nath's Xe right down the Dunlop straight at about 110mph, which suprised me....

The last two sessions were awesome, nice dry line on the track, and loads more grip, no understeering at all, car went awesomely
Apart from at the bottom of Craner curves when i carried a bit too much speed in for the amount of grip i had, which stepped the back end out, managed to get it back straight but was already sliding across the grass straight into the gravel trap

Sat on the tyrewall through the rest of that session waiting for recovery, and then got towed out the gravel. Mud and gravel everywhere, and a few battle scares, but no damage worth bothering about. I thought id won the award for muddiest car of the day, but the tigra then out did me in the final session! lol
Cleared most of the gravel out in the pits, and then went out for the final session with Jonlems mate as passenger, which was a cracker and definently my quickest of the day.

And that was that, filled up with petrol and went home :)

Few pics and vids in a while when i decide how go about uploading a 30min vid.....

All in all,top day out! Used about 30£ of fuel, and i now need 4 new tyres, but thats all part of the fun :)

Adam
15-12-08, 05:55 PM
It did, you could feel the heat coming out of the window when you stood next to the car.... lol

Myself and my mate Ben left home at 4am and started our 3 half hour drive north a bit nervous as we had never met any of you at all. we met up with Stu at toddington services on the M1 and made a slow ish  drive up to donnington. I cant remember what services it was but we then bumped into Olly "dvdev" whilst refueling, the first few guys were oustanding chaps and the excitment started to kick in big style!

We arrived at donny about 7:30 and pitched up next to Trackdaynova, met Adam and said hi to alot of you guys & girls, did the paperwork crap and found the briefing to be one of the most relaxed fastest ones ive ever been in! even faster for john as he arrived rather late trying not to laugh lol!

I had a chat with Trackday nova about car setups ect having never driven round donny in a car and set about installing some correct rubber. Met loads more of you guys and i would like to say now the day was fantastic but made 10 times better due to the utter total friendly atmostphere from everyone i really think it made the day for myself and ben, oh apart from John's wind nearly burned my eyes out!

Got out on track doing 15 mins sessions and swapping drivers, my mate ben managed to take Craners backwards and Trackday nova could have waved he was that close, was rather wierd but nice knowing Olly wouldnt follow us off lol! I then decided i could take starkeys curve rather fast than tyres or track permitted and went accross the grass :) that was fun, the donnington peeps put a tarmak footpath halfway through the grass wich i managed to hit and point the car back to the track rather than the wall LOL

The 2 last sessions were fantastic, the car handled perfectly makeing the spax rsx supension a worth while buy i still need a propper exhaust but that can wait till next year!

I really enjoyed the day and it was a pleasure to meet you all, i do hope we do this again soon on a dry track :)

Nope, not at all.

I think he'd lap quicker doing brakes and suspension tweeks on his small block moreso, than if he just stuck an XE in with his current setup.

That make sense?

See you remembered your tax disc this time then jay! lol

trackdaynova
15-12-08, 08:53 PM
Correct, despite not having the power or torque of an XE, it would enable him to stay on the loud pedal for that extra 150ft-200ft on each straight due to 4 pottage, and being able to carry the same amount of horses through the corners with some trick geo-setup... I think it'd be lapping a damn site quicker :thumb:

Stuart
15-12-08, 08:57 PM
also permitting the ability to be back on the loud pedal faster too... top fun

It all started a month ago when a png trackday was mentioned and Gav and I decided we needed another toy ! as most of you know we picked up a Tigra with a seized engine for £100 which made a ideal starting point.

The plan was to spend no more than £500 on it which we ended up being just over but hey ho it was still a mega cheap build for what it is.

This is how we started a month ago :

By the saturday just gone we were ready to go with only about 5 nights work and a couple of days of messing around we were at this stage :

Now onto the main event ! Its first outing !

Sunday started badly, I didn't go to bed till 2am and Gav had been out at a party so were both half cut at 6am when we met up to leave, him more than me so I ended up driving upto Donington Park whilst he and Lee stuffed there faces !

On arrival the first thing I saw that did make me laugh was Will F turning up towing his car with his 20XE powered Corsa Combo, a sure sign that big blocks would rule the day lol

We unloaded the car and parked it in the garage that Olly H had kinly kept us a space in, good man Olz. Straight away a few familiar and not so familiar faces came over to check out Woolworths last effort in salvaging their company, the car was looking good, the comments were all positive and the weather was .......... better than expected if not a little damp still.

First session came up, we proceeded to slowly follow the cars round on our sighting laps only for me to nearly spin off at Redgate lol Instantly I knew this trackday was going to be hard work, then on the next lap the ecu light come on and then the clutch pedal dissapeared onto the floor so we headed back into the pits just as the session got going. We assumed the worst and thought the clutch releace bearing had gone as the clutch release arm was sitting further in than it should yet wasn't working but we tightened the cable and luckily that was sorted.

Next to sort was why the ecu light was on, I quickly cut the wiring out and flashed the codes out to find a lambda fault after googling on my phone !, as the engine had a non lambda loom we knew it was the chip that had been supplied off ebay so I took the ecu apart, refitted the original Superchip and we were back in business.

Next session was Gavs which had a few sideways moments as there was no rear end grip, combined with the engine feeling flat as a fart in 4th we just decided to kick the crap out of it and make the most of the day.

later sessions were all getting better, a dry line was appearing and as long as you could keep it on the dry stuff the Tigra would just about get round without too many incidents !

At lunch we had a chat with a few other PNG members and went off to grab something to eat and a coffee as the 3 of us were starting to feel the lack of sleep from the night before lol

After lunch things really were improving, the car seemed to be making better power, the track was drying out so we started going a bit harder on track, this ofcourse did end with some rather interesting driving through Craners at some points and I think whilst I had Michelle in the car we had a few close calls too ! Typically though I had to end that session early as the gear linkage broke.

With the linkage fixed there was one session left, Gav hopped in first and after the brief stop due to the clio coming off he started to actually overtake people !!! non vauxhalls though but thats not the point, we weren't the slowest anymore :D half way through the session we came in swapped seats and I had a go on what was the dryest session of the day, we were now flat out in 4th through Craners, using all the track and finding the slides easier to control until I came into Craners giving it 200% only to lose the back end do several 360's on the track, then several more on the grass followed by a instant stop when we hit the gravel. As soon as we got out saw Olly come past giving us the thumbs up for some superb parking, the car was beached, steam was pouring off it everywhere and the Tigra had a new colour scheme, we got towed out then drove it back to the pits where everyone gave me a nice cheer :thumb:

I will apoligise for the spin though as they did end the session after and I know everyone was enjoying that session more than any other.

After that we had a quick chat with a few people then loaded the car up and headed home only to be overtook by Olz for the 50th time on the way home ! pmsl

I'd just like to say a big thanks to everyone really, it reminded me so much of the day we did back in 2005, great atmosphere and genuinely nice people to be around, thanks for all the positive comments on the car, I hope we didn't hold anyone up for too long.

I'd also like to thank Olz and Adam for taking my mate Lee out, it was his first trackday ever and he now really appreciates why I rave about them so much, good effort guys, you really impressed him :thumb:

Left home at 5:00 am and met jay(skidmarkz) at Toddington services and cruized at a nice comfortable up to Donny, meeting Oli(dh) at some random services. Arrived at 7:45ish and parked in the garage next to Olly H.

The track was very slipery to start with and despite my reservations, it made for a very fun day in the fact it slowly dried out and you could progressively push harder and harder throughout the day.
I stayed on the trusty F1's allday untill the last session then I changed to the 888's as a dry line had appeared.

Generally had a pretty tidy day, apart from a few squivy moments.
First session I was behind Adam for a few laps and finally managed to get past him on the pit straight only problem was I carried to much speed into the first corner and had my first ever bigggggggg sideways moment, which somehow I managed to pull back in(still don't know how I done it). Bummer was my camera or Adams were'nt rolling so never got it on film.
And the very last session coming out of the final chicane I caught the mud on the inside and had a bit of an; understeer-oh:tard: oversteer-arghh moment.
Not caught on film either cos my battery had gone flat.

All in all a very good day.

Great company at a great track and I now have the bug for there.
Good to meet new faces aswell as the usual, Jay(skidmarks) both olli(y)'s, James, etc etc.
Must also say thanks to Oli for lending me the dosh.:thumb:

Only have a few video's and Will upload them when I get time over the next few days.

Highlights of the day for me were
1. The synchronised spinning of Rexy and Jon/Gav in my rearview mirror down through Craner curves
2. The manic multiple spins (4+) of Jon/Gav at the bottom of Craner curves, it was hilarious to watch! What about me being constantly 2inches from your back bumper, on multiple occasions - vids to proove :D lol

Are you bored of reading about Donington Park yet? tough sh!t lol this is my take on the day.

One word: absolutely brilliant lol

So we had The Count & Danni stopped over Saturday night for a bit of coupling up and the fact it halves their journey for early in the morn on the Sunday... we'll cut out the antics of the Saturday night :thumb:

Alarm bells ring at 5am, not used to sharing our house so was wondering around in my boxers for ages first thing (mental thoughts peeps, mental thoughts), Danni seemed to enjoy it though :D

Set off around 06:15am, got to Donington Park around 07:20am, and had the choice of pits, bagged number 29 (dunno why, quite near to the toilet, but not too close for it to stink lol), and set about sending texts to all the people coming so they knew where to find us.

Unloaded the Jeep, and wondered over to sign on, where we spotted Adam, Rexy, Skidmarkz, Ian etc.

Briefing etc was the norm, got breakfast, and we were ready to rock and roll.

Oli turned up on his pikey-mobile and pitched up along side me with Stu, and next door was Adam, Nath, James & Rexy.

Due to only 44 cars being booked on the day, I bargained with Caroline as soon as I got there to split the three groups, into two groups of half hour a piece, well, actually I tried to get her to make it open pit - but she wasn't having any of it lol

So we were always out at half past the hour, 09:30am being the first... at 09:15am, I realised that my steering wheel was unusually lose, as Ian was tightening up his harnesses for the first passenger ride of the day, he sheepishly said to me "everything ok?", as I rattled the steering wheel up and down... I replied "yeah, t'will be fine mate"... he nodded lol

For some reason, I swapped from my Rainsports, to my 888s, haven't a clue why as it was mega greasy a few bits of standing water to name but a few, and it was undriveable really, but I still managed to give it large in my usual style, nothing ground breaking... my best being an appauling 1m 46s

Came in, swapped straight back onto the Rainsports again, ready for the 10:30 session, this time Michelle was passenger, nothing to report unfortunately, just a normal session with not alot happening in regards to spins, but a damn site more grip with the Rainsports on, thats fo'sho!

Third session was James The Count as passenger, never been passenger with me on home turf so he was well up for it, thoroughly enjoyed it by all accounts however it was very very greasy, but still pushing hard, struggling to keep the car in a straight line coming out of most corners, and also provoking the car into alot of slides just for fun, as either people were infront of me doing the same, or I was messing around to the people behind... One thing we do remember is James (Skidz) and his mate Ben pirouetting so delicately infront of us going down the Craners, so close that we could have 'high fived' out the window to each other lol

Then came lunch, and I still hadn't opened my bonnet, nor jacked my car up all day! wahhoooo... CV's still in tact and everything... even the rear window - thanks to chris_gsi who wasn't actually there, but the orange tape was still holding the rear window in! lol

I did decide to check my oil at lunch, and its a good job I did as it was at the bottom of the dipstick, along with a few others doing the same. Helped James (skidz) sort his battery dislodging itself, and also found a welder for Kris in the middle of his session too, to weld his gearlinkage back up.

The afternoon sessions, I'm sure we'll all agree were alot more fun that people weren't nursing their cars around so much, and people were pressing on alot harder, which became apparent due to the amount of yellow flags, and spinning cars, left right and centre lol

This is when Me & Oli made a b-line for each other, and I made a pledge that I would get as close to him as possible, as we'd both agreed to push hard, and we both knew what each others plans were at all times, so it was all safetly done. Quite pleased to say that I don't owe him a Curly Wurly, as he got no where near my ass, it was always me all over his lol and it was cringeworthy close at times, but we were both loving it!

After me giving James (skidz) some stick, he got black flagged for some reason I thought it was noise, but I decided to come in anyway as I had (what we thought) was smoke coming in the cabin, which smelt of nothing, but as I rolled into the pits, I also got pulled aside as they black flagged James by accident, and it should have been for me, for the steam coming from my car.

Got it in the pits, and took of the bonnet... booooooooo to reveal a water leak from somewhere, Jonboy told me to rev the engine, to see if they could see where the leak was coming from, so I did, and not by halves, managed to rev it so hard that the boiling water sprayed right over the car lol .. sorry lads. Massive thanks to The Count for constantly burning his hands whilst repairing my split hose :thumb:

That was thee only mishap of the day, and even that was minimal!

Other than the pics and vids I will host tomorrow, thats about it, excellent day - probably the best I'd done this year out of the 16

Massive thanks to my cameraman Steve (LiquidPug), as without him we would have zero footage from the day, thanks to Michelle (my wife) for single handedly changing my wheels and tyres over, and thanks to everyone else for making the day what it was :)

Thanks for reading everyone!

That first pics great ~ worthy of the wall maybe ;o

Track might feel like it's greasy just because it's been so cold?

Did you get round to bonding that ally box to the front underside of the bonnet? If so and it's still a concern at 120 you could try a third bonnet pin or maybe a eurorally FRP; they are exact replicas of the original with the strengthening structure bonded on :)

Any other plans for the car?

trackdaynova
16-12-08, 01:18 AM
Donington is reknown to be greasy mainly due to the fact its directly beneath the flight path of all outbound flights from EMA, which is about 6 planes per hour, and all the crap they spill out over the circuit. The fog didn't help either, it didn't clear until after 8:30am!

Never got around to doing anything with the bonnet, couldn't be bothered to be honest, 5th pin would look gash, but then, the gaffer tape isn't exactly attractive lol thanks for the tip on Ians bonnets @ EuroRallye... having spoke to Oli and Will F at the weekend, ProTec ones are also nice and stable :)

Plans for the car - none tbh, just to continue enjoying it :thumb:

Correct, despite not having the power or torque of an XE, it would enable him to stay on the loud pedal for that extra 150ft-200ft on each straight due to 4 pottage, and being able to carry the same amount of horses through the corners with some trick geo-setup... I think it'd be lapping a damn site quicker :thumb:

Fact is in every situation Olly your nova is faster than anything else on the circuit in the video; I can see you being held up on more than just straights.

You're becoming quite the racer out there, okey sometimes a bit ragged turning more than needs be, but you've begun to touch the limit more frequently.

Imagine your car with another hundred horse power & 2000 rpm………
But youve just said hes quicker that pretty much everything on track, so whys that needed?
Bar the bodies/cams etc its a std xe, which costs f**k all to replace WHEN it goes bang...... Which is a very good advantage of his engine as it stands imo

Cracking vid that, fook me you get up close :D
Loving the sidewards onto the pit straight, top driving as usually :thumb:
LOL @ how quickly you catch up with me

Cool vid Olz.

Sunday made me realise that wet/damp trackdays are actually more fun! I used to shy away from them.

Well it's quite interesting; is there need for any of it?

Why not all go out in 100BHP stock GTes and have a fair fight?

All depends on the individual how far you want to take things. Not everyone wants to be the fastest?

As I see it ~ if you could afford to build it once and run it you can afford to rebuild it.

Adam

Very good point indeed.
If your not in competitions then you dont NEED a lot of things, but its all a part of the fun, adding bits and seeing what difference they make etc :)
So yeah, fair point

Thanks for all the comments, I won't lie - its nice to read :thumb:

I'm actually embarressed with my driving, watching the videos back, very sloppy in deed - I wasn't going to host them, but JB told me to do so, as it was all in the name of fun! :D

Loved every second of it, I'm pleased with how the car went, my first outing my fastest lap was 1m 46s, on my last session, my fastest was 1m 27s which is only 2seconds shy of my fastest in the dry, which was months and months ago mind...

Would love to go back in heat so I can run on Michelins

Another teaser for the video thats being rendered at the moment... Skidmarkz broadsiding down the Craners in style lol

Burgo - it certainly suits my driving style, I do like keeping it right on the edge. Of course I could do a smooth lap if I wanted, but I prefer to provoke it into positions to try and make myself get out of them to be honest.

It's very predictable, which is why I'm chuffed that I've set it up so that its so easy to catch it, you just have to be ready for it :D

some might say my car is too far gone as a 'trackdaynova' lol

there isn't any need for alot of things, as Adam said - all you need is four wheels and an engine to go on a trackday.

but its all apart of the fun, the development stages etc :D lol

Its almost that loud, the cam does over do it a little bit, but generally the car inside is very noisy.

And im going to buy myself for crimbo a proper mount so at least I can take passengers and use the camera at the same time.

Bloody Morgan drivers! My dad would hate me for saying that, but I think he must have been a little peeved at the rampant front wheel drive cereal boxes ;o

Ah fond memories of that little bit of oversteer becoming an ogre by the 3rd slap - skidz running a normal rack on yours?

Olly is the Gear kit based on the same ratios as an F20 or are they a bit closer? 4th 120 & 5th 149?

trackdaynova
17-12-08, 01:15 AM
Quite a bit closer, but not as close as they can be with a higher final drive:

Transmission:
-Quaife F20 Straight Cut gearbox (F20SCCR)
Final Drive Ratio 3.764
... 1st Gear 2.54 ~ 55mph
... 2nd Gear 1.76 ~ 79mph
... 3rd Gear 1.42 ~ 99mph
... 4th Gear 1.19 ~ 117mph
... 5th Gear 1.040 ~ 134mph
-ZF Plate Limited Slip Differential
