Christmas Karting 2008

Just wanted to say thanks to Lee and Dan etc for all the organisational work for today. I realy enjoyed it and it was excellent to meet up with everyone again.
Some really good drivers out there but I think looking at everyones times Lee probably just shaded it as consistently the fastest on the day and it showed in the results I reckon so well done mate - top skills:thumb:

We were saying on the way back that it was important to be fast right from the off cos the way they tended to park the carts between races meant that later on the fastest drivers tended to get the better carts so all in all the best floated to the top as you would expect especially in the last race which was a thriller.

Only downside was the food problem but I guess there wasn't a lot realistically to done and also some of the carts were shockingly gash. I think by comparison Daytona looks better resourced with better overall standard of carts but then again they are more expensive

Another thanks from me, really enjoyed today. I had some good rubbing with MC and a nice little battle with Lee at one point :D. It was good to put more faces to names aswell :thumb:. I've picked a few pics out, I'll post some more later:

Thanks for your kind words Charles :) I hope everyone had a good day out. I think as far as the venue goes, the track was excellent, but the karts were, as CP said, utterly shocking. Some much faster than others, some with brakes, some without, some massively oversteery, some massively understeery, some with circular wheels, some with square ones! So much so that your grid position at the start of the heats didn't really matter, it was what kart you had that counted.

My first race was the worst for me I think, Pole Position, and by T1 I was in 4th place, thanks to the zero acceleration, after watching Dan storm from somewhere on the third row up to the front. Limped home to third nursing a wobbly wheel (probably the kart that Christian had later on lol lol)

I was lucky enough to get a goodun in the enduro though, and used it to good effect seeing as I had no team mate to share the driving (I knew I was going to hurt by the end of it) went as quick as poss at the start and managed to bring it home, not without some epic tussles with Pete and Jim!!

The final involved some brilliant racing as well, and more than happy to be beaten hands down by Sturge! Top drivin!!


Just like to say thanks to everyone who came, was great to catch up with everyone and meet some new faces, and I hope next year we can double the number of people attending!

Great day out! Nice one to Lee, etc for organising the day. Was good to put a few names to faces (General Baxter, Spudly to name but a few)!

I was gutted not to be in the final with the twin engine karts (awesome machines BTW lol) but had loads of fun in the team endurance. Scott, dont worry mate was still good fun. Me and Lee had abit of a dice at the front!

Was great fun drifting and sliding about into tyre walls, and still set the fastest lap of the day lol!

Right, now I'm fed I thought I'd do a proper mini report.

Well, the day started off pretty much as it was to continue. Without much grip!

Foolishly, as I live in the sticks I chose the most direct route, cross country. However this involved a fair bit of mileage on unclassified roads which were very untreated and undriven so I was greeted with pure white virgin ice. Not exactly a relaxing way to wake up!
Things should've improved once I reached the big smoke, but due to crap signposting I ended up in the suburbs where I could've sworn I passed Torville and Dean. Yes it really was that bad

Anyway, to the main event, and kart 18
Had myself a pretty decent kart for the practice so all seemed well, if a little tricky

Race 1, started 3rd but thanks to no acceleration dropped to 4th. Luckily though 2nd and 3rd had a bit of a coming together so i snatched a place back and luckily due to the fact that none of the karts were particularly quick managed to hold off Dar and take 3rd

Race 2, started from the back of the grid and thanks to a good start and a kart that was pretty good off the line was soon up to 2nd. Was managing to slowly catch Welsh Dan(?) when he spun out giving me the win

Race 3, 2nd on the grid alongside Dan, again got a good start and pipped him into the first corner. The kart was pretty quick and didnt handle very well but thankfully managed to stay out of trouble and hold on for the win, cementing my place in the final. Happy days!

Bit of a break then when lunch didn't turn up (another victim of the ice) and so onto....

The endurance, teamed up with Dan's brother Kagan in kart 2, I went out first for the qualifying and had a fairly abysmal time of it, resulting in a rather quick backwards excursion into the tyres and a caution board. Oops! Thankfully Kagan did a bit better and we ended up 8th on the grid.
Kagan took the first stint in the race and seemed to be struggling a bit with the handling of the kart and after 15 mins he'd had enough and i took over, heading out 3 laps down in last. It soon became pretty obvious why he'd struggled though, and on my 2nd lap I was back in, with a collapsed front right wheel bearing. Explained the dodgy handling earlier on. Back out in a new kart and managed to get into a groove and make up some places, and a couple of small spins. The kart started to pick up a misfire that got progressively worse but seemed to still be making up places and not getting caught so I carried on, finishing a reasonable 6th. Knackered but happy after a consistent drive. Could probably have had 5th but after putting a pass in at the hairpin the favour was returned with a shunt from behind at turn 6, leaving me pointing the wrong way. Unavoidable really as that part of the track was driven blind due to the low sun.


And so onto the final
Starting on pole with Dan alongside, the run down to the grid highlighted the very soft brake pedal. Didn't think too much of it considering the condition of the karts so off we went. Made a decent start and pulled myself out a small gap, then towards the end of lap 2 my throttle stuck open. Given the conditions this made things pretty tricky as I couldn't coast round the apexes and couldn't brake as late as i'd have like. After a quick gap check I decided I was pretty safe so took it a bit cautiously to try and avoid throwing it off. This maybe wasn't the best plan though as I soon had Lee right on my tail, travelling a lot quicker than I expected and so started a great battle which was to last right to the line, with a lot of place swapping, sideways action and surprisingly little contact.

Fortunately I came out on top in that one but I'd like to say a massive thankyou to Lee for a great dice and for organizing the day, and to everyone else that was there for making it what it was! In all there was very little between the lap times and a lot of people deserve praise for some great driving throughout the day :thumb:

Unfortunately the same can't be said for those on the road as my drive home was delayed by a large collection of police cars and recovery trucks clearing the carnage! Seems the conditions didn't improve much!

Can i just add.
When i handed the kart over after 30 mins of running fine Rob took the wheel thats when the probs started.
1st time Number 1 engine switched off then the pull cord broke on start up.
2nd time Came in as the wheel fell off.
3rd time Came in as engine 2 conked out.
4th time Came in as engine 2 conked out again.
5th time Came in as engine 2 conked out yet again.
How many times does an engine have to fail before they give you another kart.

Im pretty sure you had my kart from the enduro. I properly cooked the brakes on it, bless it. By the end of the hour I was using the back end to scrub off speed, and the hairpin at the end of the back straight was properly scary lol

Looks like i was lucky to not suffer with the sticky throttle when I had it.

hate it when its pouring smoke out the exhaust and am running low on fuel lol

The karting was amazing, next time i hope all the karts are a little more evenly matched.
I think the best way to have selected the best drivers would be for each driver to do 5 laps in the same kart
that way the best time would count and would have been abit more even

Thanks to Lee for organising the event. Like everyone else I had a really good day. Was really happy to finish 2nd with Steve in the enduro. Unfortunately I had a spin in the final which left me dead last, but managed to scramble back up to 4th by the end of the race.

The karts were interesting to say the least, especially when they only had 1 engine running.

Was good to put names to faces aswell as seeing some of the regulars :)

Looking forward to the next karting event.

Also found out I'm far too aggressive in the wet/ice'ish for karting,i should of calmed down and used more room for breaking, that was the main reason i kept having a chat with the tyre walls! lol

Must say i did have some good races though, me and Chris T were tussling all the way through on one race,was great fun :D (i pushed him off wide on T1 lol) and the hairpin for me and him was the best part, we kept swapping places,into it and then out of it lol

As per everyone else, well done to lee for making this happen and thankyou to all those that came to the event, the karts werent the best but there was a good atmosphere non the less with plenty of banter which is what the days are really about.

Myself and baby bro arrived about 9am and nattered to all the usuals until we hit the first hurdle which was trying to self lubricate ourselves and fit our suits on. Without the extra layers of clothing it may have been easier but i definitley heard a few cracks as i 'eased' myself into my suit lol and then had to remember that if i dropped anything on the floor it was lost, as i didnt want to risk bending down to get it. Next fun part was the draw for the teams, much to my joy charles got chris t, now i knew this was bad for him and found it highly amusing as chris and myself are pretty level kart wise and both crap in comparison. Soon after followed the screams of "nooooooo" as mark realised he had equally been shafted by having myself as a team mate pmsl lol lol

In the shoot outs I was lucky kart wise until the very end, the first race i had a stormer and come from third through to first before the first bend, all i heard was lee shout did you cheat to which i replied no whilst zooming by, i did have a small battle mid way through but as was learnt quickly if i had the racing line then anyone on the outside was going to be chewing tyrewall iuf they couldnt slow down, and i managed to keep hold of first place. The second race was pretty much the same, started from the back i dodged the few spinners and had a reasonable kart much to lee's disgust which meant i managed yet again a very suprising second place finish. Onto the third race and a pole start, average kart but with the racing whippets that were there first was never going to be easy so ended up settling for second again and securing my place in the shoot out.

For the endurance race it was deemed sensible for mark to start the race and get us the best position possible, obviously i pointed and laughed as he spun out on the very rare occasion just to let him know he was a fool, but then when it was my turn he glady returned the favour as i did exactly the same bloody thing much to his joy lol My stint in this was ok, the kart we had wasnt the fastest but it was quite easily held in shape. I spent most of my time broad side and drifting it right on the edge as the extra bit of weight i carry didnt help at all through the bends as anyone else equally or more heavy also realised. It certainly gave mowgli something to think about on the first bend as he had first hand experience of this when right behind me, thinking i was going to get grip and side punt him at full speed. Again quite successful and a finish of third position for our team which was good considering.

The final shoot out for me was a complete disaster, i managed to get about 2 clean laps in then my kart went down, changed karts and yet again kart no.2 also went down on me. After watching the guy faff about i said sod it i'll retire and he insisted i stay there as the rules were if i came in through their own mechaincal fault i would get seeded back in where i left, obviously the chequered flag came out as they couldnt get me another fully working kart. The final result of this was i got a shared second place finish with lee (bullcrap apology) as he officially earnt and finished second and that was my position before my issues as they couldnt get me back out.

Overall after thought........ Again a damn good day and it was nice to try somewhere different. The circuit was good tbh and apart from the food issue the day went very well and flowed nicely. As everyone has said the thing that let it down the most was really the karts as some where shot to bits like loose wheels or knackered engines, meaning not enough to go round by the end of the day. The only good thing with the karts was it was always abit of a lottery who got which one so the crap was generally equally shared between people
