Your stereo must a have the live all the time wire and the ignition feed the wrong way round and when you put the ignition off is the amp going off

If the perm and ign lives are the wrong way round on the headunit it's probably not cutting the power to the amp.

i was told by a mate to re-wire the yellow to the red and the red to the yellow? does that make any sense to anyone?

yes that is the correct way to wire if you only want it on with ignition so your amp light goes off when ignition is off yes??? what size engine you got? i am def thinking battery and alternator mate your alternater is not charging the battery also where have you earthed the amp too??

Head unit losing stations = permanent live wired to ignition live.

Battery dying = knackered battery or alternator, check battery charge.
